"A(e)riæl" is a metal mobile. In this photo it's hanging in front of a brick wall with the dangling objects casting dark shadows. Copper rods have been bent to form two hangers with curved ends. A silvery tone mesh has been draped along like a sail or a pleated curtain. A third rod - bent asymmetrically - connects to hooks at diagonal corners allowing the mesh to have a skew to it in addition to the wavy arrangement. The off centre bend point is used to hang the mobile from a chain on the ceiling. A variety of metal bits and bobs have been hung from the mesh with hooks and jump rings. Most were from a lot of metal detector finds and have obviously spent extensive time underwater. There are several forks, a handle from a no longer identifiable piece of cutlery, keys, hardware, and other mystery scraps. The fork the most leftward in the photo already had a strange bend and warping of the tines when I received it. I was especially drawn to it and tried recreating it with other forks (only partially successfully). Regardless, it was the jumping off point for this piece. It made me wonder what a chandelier might look like if the Little Mermaid built one out of her favourite thing-a-ma-bobs. At some point, I'd like to pull this out and have another go at photographing it. Perhaps figure out the right lighting to get some really dramatic shadows from it. #MakersMARTch #Connection #Sculpture #Assemblage #ArtYear #Art #Photography
"A(e)riæl" is probably the piece I've had the most difficulty figuring out how to really show off digitally.
