A singing Eastern Meadowlark - a medium-sized songbird with a bright yellow neck and breast with a black V on it is standing in the midst of, and surrounded by pale tan, thin-bladed wiregrasses, on the left side of the frame, mostly facing the viewer, but head turned to the right and beak opened wide to sing.

Two separated photos of a male (left) and female Crested Caracara in side view facing each other. Each is throwing their head backwards. They are large raptors with dark brown bodies, speckled brown on white breast and white throat and neck with a dark, almost black crest on top of the head and bright orange eye and face and a gray bill. The male's legs and feet can be seen and they are also bright orange. He is standing in a sandy, flat area and has one leg back and back of foot raised, with green and brown grasses in front of him and in the background. The female is in green grasses too tall to show her legs and there is grass in the background. Her head is back so far, her crest is on her back and her head is completely upside down horizontally.

This encounter happened as the female, in company with some vultures, was beginning to work on some carrion in the grasses. The male flew in and landed nearby and began to court her by calling and head throwing. She apparently agreed to wait for her food. Right after she did her own head throw and call, the male flew over, landed on her back, and they mated. It took almost no time and after the male finished, she went right back to her meal.

For the sake of this illustration of caracara courtship, I took some distracting elements out of the background on these images.

A male Eastern Towhee (white-eyed) has a black throat, head and back, a rusty red side, and white belly. He is viewed from the side and has an open beak singing with his head lifted. He is perched on an unripe green cluster of berries atop a stem of Beautyberry, with its green/yellow leaves obscuring his tail and below him. The background is clear olive green which darkens away from the bird.

Most Eastern Towhees have a dark reddish eye, but this bird's eye is striking pale yellow, a characteristic found only in birds in Florida and some part of the south U.S.

A light-eyed, male Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus alleni) is my #BirdoftheDay for the #Songbirds theme and is also #PerfectlyPerched (alternate theme) on Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve.

Side view of Swallow-tailed Kites mating at the top of a green leafy tree branch. The male bird is perched on the female bird's back with his wings held up high. Both kites are white with dark, nearly black top wings and a black feather border underneath the wing. The background sky is clear blue.

Swallow-tailed Kites (Elanoides forficatus) doing the wild thing very high up in a tree at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve. Selected for #WingsOpenNotFlying theme, it works pretty well for the #BlackandWhite theme, too!

Singing Eastern Meadowlark. A patterned brown and white bird with bright yellow breast and throat, black collar, black eye and forehead stripes. It's perched in profile on one of a few thin, bare sticks, facing to the right with an open beak as it sings. Green and tan Florida prairie background.

Needed a meadowlark today. I never tire of seeing, hearing, and photographing them. From Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, Okechobee County, Florida.

An adult Crested Caracara perched on an old fence post in profile. A large, unfalcon-like falcon with a dark body, black, flat-top cap, and white neck. Orange bare skin on face and end of beak is light blue. Orange legs, feet with talons. Green natural background with very dark gray/blue sky.

One of my favorite species, Florida Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve. A late afternoon thunderstorm was coming in from behind and light was lovely. Such charismatic birds.
