The self seeded inappropriately positioned Holly is full of pink flower buds this year. Today I saw my first Holly Blue butterfly and I am hopeful at least one will visit and leave precious eggs. And even more hopeful that if there are eggsn the predator whose name I cannot remember doesn't find them! I've only had caterpillars once and all four were predated. Interesting, but not what I expected.

It could be a gummy worm with bristles. The early instar Atala caterpillar is less than 1/2” long with aposematic coloring—rusty orange body marked with paired yellow dorsal dots. Zamia integrifolia, its host, has thick, leathery leaflets from which the younger instars eat the green flesh, leaving a brown framework. Later ones consume entire leaflets.

Iridescently blue-purple bird with red and yellow bill, huge yellow feet strides across the broad leaves of Spatterdock.

Light catches a rust-orange butterfly, antennae wide and proboscis extended into a pale purple thistle flower.

A tiny alligator with orange stripes hides in the shallows and looks for its mother to return.

Not yet devoured by a turtle, a cupped Spatterdock flower reaches up from the water. Beside it another is in bud.

Everglades National Park today: full of life.

Hanging vertically on a stem among brown chrysalises are two newly-emerged butterflies, their black wings arced chrysalises with iridescent blue spots. Their fat, orange-red abdomens warn would-be predators that they’re toxic.

Emerging from brown leaves is a small puffball flower on a thin furry stem. Its fresh pink filaments are tipped with bright pollen.

We don't get Waxwings very often and these were very distant. Exquisite birds with a crest, dark throat. Wings have white, yellow and red patterns
