Glossy dark green holly-like leaves topped with clusters of small yellow flowers.
The evergreen Tall Oregon Grape, aka Mahonia, official state flower of Oregon. It grows wild and bold in Washington's sunniest places, too. The berries will be a rich purplish blue and are edible. #pnw #nativeplants
Two skunk cabbages encircled by a bramble of swamp dewberries trailing on the ground in the leaf litter.
Caught these two out foraging swamp dewberries together.
It’s a little too early guys, calm down. #nativeplants #skunkcabbage

Two flowers each with eight perfectly white petals
A clump of white rue flowers, with cut leaf toothwort leaves deceptively looming in the background
Mammoth Cave NP delivered some great spring ephemerals... I'm ready to see some of these in Minnesota now

Vivid dark pink flowers with open upper petals and scooping lower petals emerge from short, reddish-pink stems on the otherwise bare brownish branches of a tree. The main branch cuts sideways across the picture, and in the background are a portion of a screened porch to the right and a light blue house beyond, with other buildings vaguely visible in the distance.
In today’s picture, after looking to be on the absolute verge of it for most of 2 weeks now, the redbud (Cercis canadensis) by our back porch finally began to open up its blooms today!
It’s spring now, everyone can get started blooming.

Conducting an experiment as I walk the pup to sow some of last fall’s #wildflowers seeds in a nearby empty lot. This is my secret way so I don’t have to open-carry a gardening tool 😂😂😂

A narrow patch of dirt between an arborvitae and red osier dogwood that will someday be filled with various native plants.
The first and smallest native garden expansion is all set! The long-term goal is to fill this space with a common ninebark or two. Short-term plan is a mix of prairie species. #nativeplants
Just off-center, to the right, white, fuzzy root hairs, emerging from an ovalular tan seed, are visible against dark brown soil and textured chunks of vermiculite. These seeds, sweet bliss alyssum blend were planted around noon on March 28th and about 24 hours later, several seeds were showing signs of germination
I planted this alyssum yesterday and I already see several seeds beginning to germinate
This is probably the fastest I've ever gone from seed to something more
(Likely due to this being my first year growing flowers from seeds that aren't #nativeplants, which can take a looong time to germinate)
close-up of a flower stalk lined with unusual pink and white flowers. all of the visible flowers are staminate (male). they have a set of small pink bracts around the base, but no true sepals or petals. the most substantial part of the flowers are the stamens, of which there are four per flower, with thick white filaments capped with small tan anthers.
two light pink flowerstalks of some allegheny pachysandras; the plants' main stems, off which these two smaller stalks grow, is out of sight. the stalks are lined with two rows of opposite flowers. the flowers have small pink bracts at the base, but no sepals or petals, just four thick white stamens with small tan anthers. these two stems are poking up through a layer of fallen tree leaves on the forest floor.
growing close along the forest floor, the main stems of these pachysandras grow prone within the leaf litter, only turning up by the end where they put out opposite green leaves with a mottled light green pattern. some flower stalks poke up through the leaf litter separately; they grow from low on the plant's main stem, so they're not necessarily near their own leaves. the three flowerstalks in this photo have red stems. the staminate (male) flowers have red bracts cupped around them at their base, but no sepals or petals. their only other feature are four thick white stamens with pale yellow anthers.

Pachysandra procumbens
"pachy" thick, "andro" male --> thick stamens
often called allegheny spurge, but it is no longer considered to belong to the spurge order (which is no longer considered to exist :)

Rue Anenome, and a few bellworts hiding in the background waiting to bloom (both misfits transplants!)These have just sprouted out in the kast ~48hrs ,no doubt thanks to the 80F+temps and burst of rain. #Nativeplants #NativeVaPlants #NativeHabitat #NativeGardening #GuerrillaGardening #MisfitsGarden
New buds on our desert willow! This little guy dropped all its leaves after we planted and went dormant. We weren’t sure if it would survive the transplant but it’s looking great! Hopefully the early heat waves in SoCal aren’t throwing it off too much. #cnps #nativeplants
A snapdragon stalk with white flowers up its stem and a tight cluster of pinkish buds at its terminus surrounded by sages that it uses to climb. The background is a mix of various chaparral plants
Easy to miss (that’s it in the middle) the white sage is surrounded by a colorful well hydrated chaparral community.
What’s Blooming in SoCal? Dang, you’d think that I could have gotten a better pic —but for what it’s worth Coulter snapdragon (Antirrhinum coulterianum) A fire follower so it’s not quite as prolific 8+ years out. It uses tendrils to climb the adjacent sage plant. California #nativePlants #nature
An evergreen oak reaches over a dirt trail surrounded by chaparral plants. The sky is blue with a few contrails.
This tree has a marker in the bark which has been burned in a fire identifying it as tree number 2088
An Oak Tree a Day
Say hello to oak tree 2088 & commend it for all the hard work that goes into helping shade the trail. This tree keeps on working even after major fire damage to its bark. California #nativePlants #nature

10+ seedlings just popping up out of the soil.
I just found tons of seedlings popping up in one of my gardens that I don't recognize. After thinking about it, I think they're helianthus petiolaris, which would be amazing if they self-seed this easily. #nativeplants

A photograph showing a group of long male Alder Tree catkins that are a wine-red colour, hanging from a small branch. A few smaller female catkins are seen behind the main group swell as some old tree fruits. These small, woody, cone-like fruit structures turn dark brown or black in the autumn, often remaining on the tree through winter. The photograph was taken on a bright but breezy day, the background is grey/blue from a cloudy sky. England, UK
One for #WildflowerHour #treeflowers challenge: So many to choose but it was the beautiful elongated wine red male catkins from this Alder tree that impressed me... almost ready to turn yellow and release its pollen! 📷 🌿
