Text reading: Elke Mackenzie (1911–1990) was a British botanist and lichenologist who specialised in studying lichens — complex organisms formed from fungi and algae — including species found in some of the harshest environments on earth. Educated in Botany at the University of Edinburgh, she went on to work at major scientific institutions, including the British Museum (Natural History), universities in Argentina and Canada, and as Director of the Farlow Herbarium at Harvard University. Her fieldwork included expeditions to Antarctica, where she collected and documented many lichen species, some new to science.
In 1971, Elke transitioned and formally adopted her name, continuing to live and work as her true self despite the prejudice she faced within academic institutions at the time. Her legacy lives on in the many lichens and Antarctic features named in her honour — including biological terms and species bearing her name — and through the example she set as a queer scientist breaking barriers in natural science.

A group of 16 people of various ages and genders posing for a group photo inside a church. In this image they are posing formally.

The group is positioned in front of a stone wall with two arched windows. To the left and right are banners for 'Open Table Leyland' which include the phrase 'A place where everyone belongs'. A large, rainbow-colored balloon in the shape of the number '4' is visible behind the group, marking their 4th anniversary celebration.

In the centre, two individuals wear ceremonial chains of office, associated with the local government roles of Mayor and Consort. The people are dressed in a variety of casual and semi-formal clothing, including sweaters, jackets, and t-shirts. The overall atmosphere is joyful and inclusive.

Last night I joined with others to mark the end of #LGBTplusHistoryMonth with a screening of the documentary ‘Legendary Children - all of them queer’ about the Pride pioneers of 1972.
Last year we lost a few more of those legends - listen and capture the history while we can still celebrate them.

As it's both #LGBTplusHistoryMonth (UK) & #BlackHistoryMonth (US & Canada) there's double cause to celebrate Marsha P (‘pay it no mind’) Johnson, queer, black, trans / drag (on record in her own words as each), sex worker and homeless activist.

Me holding a placard that reads, ‘Stonewall was a riot, Pride is a protest.’

Every generation is fabulous in its own way; every generation faces its own challenges.
I am grateful to my elders, from whom I learned so much.
With the challenges that lie ahead we must listen to and learn from our rich gay history.
Don’t just get angry, get organised.

Galop in the mid 00s.
From 2004 onwards, Galop expanded its remit to officially include and support trans people.
Following a number of high-profile homophobic murders, Galop played a crucial role in providing a link between the LGBT+ community and the police with information gathered from reports to our helpline assisting successful arrests and convictions.
An online reporting facility was developed and Galop began to work in partnership with other agencies and the government to undertake research and deliver education projects.

Galop launched a ground-breaking new service advising LGBT+ victims and survivors of sexual violence, the only specialist LGBT+ sexual abuse support in the UK during this time.
In 2009, Galop also published ‘Filling in the Blanks’ - a landmark report which increased understanding of the level of unreported anti-LGBT+ hate crime and assessed services available to victims of these crimes.

Me modelling a Pride 1991 tshirt, featuring a Pink triangle, ribbons and love hearts.

In the 1970/80s the Pink Triangle was reclaimed from its Nazi origins as a defiant symbol for our community (in a similar way to the reclamation of ‘queer’).
It was used for gay protest and for gay Pride.
It was gradually replaced by the more spiritual and inclusive rainbow.

Galop in the mid 90s
In 1995, the ‘new’ Galop was launched at Pride, followed by the rebranded ‘Shoutline!’ helpline.
Galop also started to engage with a more diverse community, officially including bisexual people in its remit for the first time. In 1996, Galop employed our first dedicated Youth Worker and hosted four ‘Action on Hate Crimes’ public community forums, with a particular commitment to reaching out to women and the Black community.

Expanding our youth work, Galop published 'Telling It Like It Is' - a detailed report on the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people and their experiences of anti-LGB violence.
In 1999, Galop also launched its Black Services Development Project and became a key agency in helping to establish the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Advisory Group (LGBT AG) which worked alongside the police after the bombing of the Admiral Duncan.
