"Houses - Richmond Street" 1911
Canadian artist Lawren S. Harris (1885 - 1970)
"He once told fellow Canadian artist Emily Carr, “I am in great need of losing my littleness and sharing completely in the life of the universe, in water and skies and land and light.” #art #artlover #LawrenHarris
A painting of a rocky boreal forest by Lawren Harris with distinctly odd colours: the sky is a bright, unnatural yellow, the pine trees purplish blue, and the lichen-covered rocks in the foreground are various colours.

We are continuing our weekly artwork feature today, as well as, our rainbow / pride-inspired artworks for the month of June! Today we're happy to be sharing, "ROY G BIV in Bloom" a 12x16" Acrylic on Canvas from May 2025. [Original Artwork Available @ https://www.craigscanvases.com/shop/p/roy-g-biv-in-bloom] The title for this artwork refers to the colors of the visible spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet which are present in a rainbow. This may be our favorite pride piece as we explored a different take on the rainbow. This may best be encapsulated in the quote by Lawren Harris, "Visible nature is but a distorted reflection of a more perfect world and the creative individual viewing her is inspired to perceive within and behind her many garments, that which is timeless and entirely beautiful." Artist's Statement / Backstory: I spent some time thinking about what I wanted to paint and in-turn have others paint during pride month this year. I made the rainbow that I featured last week; but, I wanted to present it in a different way. The thought occurred to me that depending on what the image was some viewers may respond positively to an image and not a rainbow artwork. That was the basis for the seven vases and accompanying flora placed inside them in 'rainbow order.' This accompanied me this past weekend at a private paint party and five of the seven attendees used this as the inspiration for creating their artwork! Here's hoping you enjoy it as well!

Full-view of a painting depicting a street scene with residential buildings. The foreground shows a light beige/tan-colored street. A low, reddish-pink wooden fence runs horizontally across the mid-ground, in front of the buildings. Two buildings are the primary focus. The building on the left is a smaller, structure, with a side angled towards the viewer, mostly colored in shades of reddish-orange and muted greens. A muted, greyish-white building occupies the center-right. The central building, a two-story structure, is a light grayish-white, with visible texture and some patchy areas of a yellowish hue apparent on the walls. Features such as windows and doors are painted with teal green colour on the windows and teal-green doors. The roofs are a dark-grayish slate colour, showing some shading gradients. On the right side of the central building, a two-story structure, also presented in a similar style to the central one, is partially visible. Its exterior is a mixture of light browns and teal hues. Small, light-teal shutters are visible on the windows. The sky is a light azure blue with hints of white clouds. There's a suggestion of sunlight on varying parts of the scene, though it isn't harsh, with shading also depicted. A glimpse of another building is seen on the far left side of the painting. The overall style of the painting suggests a simplified, almost impressionistic approach to rendering the buildings and the environment, with visible brushstrokes.
