Unless there is a lot of money on the table or some other demonic deadline, don’t lose sleep over writing. It’s not healthy. There’s no advantage to stressing yourself out and making yourself miserable while writing a book.
Have fun!

Doing a first pass edit for a client this afternoon and noticing a lack of goals for the POV character. Your characters need to want something.

I'll be honest, a lot of the struggle with writing the first draft of a scene with Big Emotions is just screaming in your own head in a small panic as you try to get coherent words on the page. Books are hard to write.

Getting from "I have an idea!" to "I finished my book!" takes a lot more work than some people think. And a lot more time. Give yourself space and time to work.
Then hire me if you need help.

I take physical notes during the first read of a client's work and, I admit, I've fallen in love with the 0.38 ballpoint tips the local stationary store has. I can fit a lot of notes on a page.

Write it messy.
Write it bad.
Write it out of order.
You can edit anything you write, but you can't edit a blank page. You've got to write.

Big, emotional scenes are only emotional for the reader if the reader knows the characters. We have to care. The good news is humans pack bond easily, so it doesn't take much work to make us care.

It all matters. The words you write. The words you delete. The words you think. The words you say.
It all matters because it all becomes part of you and how you write.
Time spent doing what you love is never wasted time.

Start with lower stakes and then escalate as the book progresses, often forcing the characters to choose from their original goal to another one and using the friction of indecision to power the plot.

If you can take your character out of the book and nothing about the ending changes, they aren't the main character.

Tropes and cliches are like pizza and milkshakes and fries. They may not be astounding and new, but they are delicious and we all have our favorites.
If you find yourself writing the same ones all the time, awesome! Call it your brand and enjoy what you love.

One of the most crucial skills any author needs to learn is recognizing how they write a first draft. If you are a super planner with a really clean first draft, awesome! If you underwrite and need to add details in Draft 2, do that! If you meander a lot, learn to refocus.

If you think publishing is writing a book in one draft, running spellcheck, and then hitting Publish on Amazon... please talk to an author and ask them about publishing. I promise, it takes more work than that to get a good book.

How you end chapters (and your book!) helps determine what genre your book is. Endings of sentences, scenes, chapters, and books all add weight to the thought and emotion they end on. If you keep ending on questions, it's a mystery. If you end with fear, it's horror.
