From the Time of Ignorance to the Afterlife: Gendered Chronotopes and Religious Nostalgia in Swahili-Language Islamic Marital Booklets | Signs and Society | Cambridge Core From the Time of Ignorance to the Afterlife: Gendered Chronotopes and Religious Nostalgia in Swahili-Language Islamic Marital Booklets

Just out: my new piece in Signs and Society looks at Swahili Islamic marital booklets and how they weave together gender, time, and religious longing.
From pre-Islamic “ignorance” to the afterlife, these texts imagine marriage as a moral journey across eras. doi.org/10.1017/

Yes. Laura Ahearn in Living Language talks about 3 meanings of "performance." I now add the fourth (='empty, just for show'), but it's so dominant that the others don't stick.

This looks fantastic! Do I need to use it in my #linganth class next semester?

Language and Societies abstracts, vol. 16 (2025) The abstracts below are summaries of papers by early-career scholars from the 2025 edition of my course, Language and Societies. The authors are undergraduate and graduate students in anthropology …

Once again this year, the incredible students in my Language & Societies graduate #linganth class at Wayne State shine brightly. So proud! Check out the abstracts of their research papers – and feel free to comment on them! Index linked on this post; individual abstracts follow in this thread.

Folks in #ling and #linganth who work on translation / bilingualism: what's the term (if one) for when a word/phrase is translated into another language at the end of an utterance? Usually for clarification. Like "He's a pendejo - an idiot".

I'm happy to be listed in this awesome Starter Pack for #linganth!!!!

Congratulations! I often talk in my #linganth classes about conversational synchronization and sometimes also about the hypothesis of singing as a precursor to spoken language. This provides a foundation.

Denise Schmandt-Besserat on #writing doesn't use the terms #sign and #symbol in the Peircean sense. Does her work otherwise hold up?

This reading challenge fascinates me, including the explanation for it. I too have been following the convo about how people "aren't reading" but it depends what we mean. I'm teaching about media and modalities this semester and will definitely share this.

Why there’s no such thing as normal in child development One of the tricky things about researching child development is that it occurs within a cultural and social context.

Anthro 101

WEIRD societies set the “norm.”

And only certain groups within those societies.

I know this topic has mostly been claimed by biological anthropologists and psychologists, but Linguistic Anthropologists, what's your favorite explanation of #LanguageOrigins? Something that centers interactions more than information?

Yes "podcast" means 'something recorded, audio or video,' at least the way my students use it now. This is similar to how "novel" means 'a book that is not a textbook' to undergrads. Sure, that's not how I use it. But this expansion of meaning is fascinating

This image is a comparison table titled “Panchayat and Talanoa Compared.” It contrasts the characteristics of Panchayat and Talanoa in two columns.

Under Panchayat:
	•	“Located at ceremonial center”
	•	“Oratorical high-register Hindi”
	•	“Big men participate and control”
	•	“Resolves faction by status appeal”
	•	“Enhances reputations”
	•	“Conflictual past > irenic future”

Under Talanoa:
	•	“Takes place in host’s private den”
	•	“Jangli bat devalued slang Hindi”
	•	“Non-big men participate”
	•	“Makes potential faction interest”
	•	“Potentially damages reputations”
	•	“[ ] past > (?) conflictual future”

The text is neatly aligned, with key differences emphasized. The table is simple, black and white, without any additional graphics or design elements. (made by ChatGPT)

Are you part robot? A linguistic anthropologist explains how humans are like ChatGPT – both recycle language We humans like to think that our language is original, but we absorb large amounts of it from others and liberally repeat and remix what we hear – just as language AIs do.

Has someone out there in #linganth or #sociolx written an essay / thinkpiece on the language ideologies underpinning learning outcomes / 'outcome-ese'? Or do I have to do it myself?

Dear #linganth #sociolinguistics twitter, my book came out in Mar 2020, the week the pandemic shutdowns hit N.America. I'd be grateful if you could recommend it to your institution's library for purchase! It's been reviewed in J. of Socioling & JM&MD. Thx!
