For the first time that I can recall in 19 years as a teacher, we’re having the math and ELA department chairs meet virtually with our 8th grade teachers to talk about course recommendations. Recommendation guidelines exist, but the conversation will help clarify!
#LiteracyLeadership
Conversations with peers have reminded me that I need to review processes (budget timelines after they submit requests, how to navigate our Google folders, etc.).
I’m familiar because I use these all the time, but my colleagues aren’t in the weeds with these processes.

Although working on resources & common assessments can bolster an English department’s practices, I find that giving space for ELA teachers to do literature, composition, and literacy work together builds teacher & team efficacy: let’s journal, analyze poems, & talk about books!
#LiteracyLeadership
On Friday, our 5th grade department chair and 6-12 ELA department chairs met. We’re finally working to establish priority standards K-12 (6500-student district) to provide resources & eventually gather student samples across grade levels as references for teachers & students.

Registration closes July 30 The Reading League Chapter Network Summer Book Study of MTSS for Reading Improvement by Drs. Stephanie Stollar and Sarah Brown
Perhaps the most essential role of school leaders in reading improvement efforts is getting the conditions right for learning in each classroom. Brown and Stollar, MTSS for Reading Improvement, page 30
Prevention is easier and more effective to implement in schools than intervention. Intervention is resource intensive and not as likely to be effective. Therefore, it is important to prevent reading difficulties in kindergarten and first grade, provide intervention early in every grade, and use classroom reading instruction to reduce the number of students who need intervention. Brown and Stollar, MTSS for Reading Improvement, page 51
Collaborative organizations put action to the belief in the value of all viewpoints, accomplish goals more quickly, and avoid dissent and sabotage by including all voices in planning from the start. Brown and Stollar, MTSS for Reading Improvement, page 66
There’s still time to join thousands of educators & school leaders deepening their knowledge of the #SoR through our Chapter Network Summer Book Study.
Register by July 30 to access book study materials, including the recordings & pacing guide.
