A plump "Lincoln's" sparrow perched on the snowy, stick-strewn ground, a mouthful of snowflakes in their beak. The back of their body is in shadow, their front in light, their head turned to the side as they chew. They're a very pretty sparrow, with a buff wash across their front and sides, which is then painted with very fine dark streaks, as if drawn on with a fountain pen.

The same bird in the same spot on the ground, only now looking ahead so that they're fully in profile, with more of their body in the sunlight. Snowflakes cling to their beak.

A Song Sparrow is shown in profile with nesting material carried in its bill. The sparrow has a gray and brown streaked back, gray face with brown eyeline and crown, with light belly also streaked with brown. Its legs and feet are kind of a drab fleshy pink. It's perched atop a low stump, with wings up and back, about to disappear into foliage.

A small brown sparrow is partially obscured by branches in a leafless tree. What differentiates this little guy from other sparrows is the red cap and the small dark brown/black chest spot. I like to think it looks like a little heart.

From yesterday, I saw a flock of #LittleBrownBirds while I was out looking for migrating water fowl.

This particular little brown guy is called an American Tree Swallow.

I was at the Amana Lily Pond in Iowa during the golden hour, taking pictures of Trumpeter Swans, which are large white birds. The juveniles are grey, getting lighter as they get older. As I focused in on this family group resting on the pond, a golden ray of sunlight came from the clouds and named this goose King (or Queen) by placing a beam of sunlight right on it. In this photo: three resting swans on the left. They are mostly grey and have their heads tucked under their wings. In the center, one swan is awake and keeping watch. It would be all white, except for the golden beam from the sun. A fifth swan is on the right side of the photo, also with head tucked under wing.
