“In the algebra of fantasy, A times B doesn’t have to equal B times A. But, once established, the equation must hold throughout the story.”
--Lloyd Chudley Alexander (1924– 2007)

Lloyd Alexander, the beloved fantasy writer behind "The Chronicles of Prydain," once explained storytelling with an imaginative math metaphor. In his 1965 essay “The Flat-Heeled Muse,” he notes that in fantasy writing, unlike real algebra, the order you set things up in doesn’t have to behave normally at first - magic, odd rules, unusual elements can start in whatever order the author needs. But once those rules are in place, the internal logic of the world must stay consistent. Break it, and the story starts to feel like a mess, not a magical journey.

What Alexander really nails is this: believability in fiction isn’t about realism, it’s about consistency. Readers will accept talking animals, time travel, or enchanted swords if the story honors the rules it creates. When a tale keeps its internal math straight, even if it’s strange math, the characters feel real, and the world holds together. That’s why your favorite fantasy worlds feel “true” even when they’re wildly impossible, because the logic stays intact from page one to the last.

After many years of internal debate, I've finally decided this is my all-time favourite book. I bought this edition back in 1998 and it is one of my most cherished possessions.

Perusing #AVClub comments about #WheelofTime's cancellation, and my take-home impression is that my fellow "Welsh Tract" native #LloydAlexander isn't nearly as well-known among fans of post- #Tolkien fantasy as Sanderson or GRRM, but really ought to be. (1/2)
