Lost Footage: Kent State's Darkest Day Finally Revealed- 1970 I was in the National Archives 35 years ago looking for footage. The man who worked there bought out a film and said, "You want to see some Kent State footage that's never been seen?" He showed me this and I recorded it right off the screen in the National Archives. On May 4, 1970, during protests against the Vietnam War and President Nixon’s expansion of the war into Cambodia, the Ohio National Guard confronted student demonstrators on campus. The atmosphere had already been tense for days, with unrest, property damage in town, and multiple clashes between police and students. The Guard marched to disperse the crowd, used tear gas, and advanced up a hill. Students retreated but did not fully disperse. At 12:24 p.m., 28 National Guard soldiers turned and fired 67 shots in roughly 13 seconds. Four students were killed Allison Krause Jeffrey Miller Sandra Scheuer William Schroeder Nine others were wounded, some severely. Two of the students killed were not participating in the protest — they were simply walking between classes. Responsibility has never been fully settled. Many Guardsmen claimed they feared for their lives, believing students were advancing or possibly armed. Students were unarmed. Photographic and audio evidence shows no clear order to fire, though one “sound analysis” decades later suggested a shouted command might have been given — this remains disputed. No Guardsman was convicted or held criminally liable. A civil settlement in 1979 awarded money to survivors and families, but the state of Ohio did not accept responsibility — it called the shooting “regrettable” but did not admit wrongdoing. Most historians and investigators conclude the shooting was unjustified, that the Guard was not in real danger, and that the firing was a combination of panic, poor leadership, and extreme tension.
