If not, it is what it is.” At nearly the same time, Donald Trump confirmed that his meeting with generals and admirals will be nothing short of a loyalty test, saying bluntly that if he doesn’t like someone, “I'll fire them right on the spot.”

The pledge is a loyalty oath, written for a number of reasons: distrust of some Americans after the Civil War distrust of immigrants who began arriving in the US in large numbers, and for Youth’s Companion Magazine – to sell flags. In 1890, the Magazine asked readers to send in writing that could promote American values, like patriotism. A 13-year-old in Kansas claimed he sent in a pledge of allegiance that is identical, except for one word, to the pledge published in Youth’s Companion magazine three months after the teenager submitted his version. And a historian recently found the pledge written by the 13-year-old boy published in a newspaper that pre-dated the magazine. Whoever wrote the pledge, it had the desired effect. The magazine sold more than 25,000 flags to schools across the U.S.
