Internal evidence that the elves wrote alliterative verse. The line "In linked words has long been wrought" from his fragment of an alliterative Lay of Leithian directly echoes the same formula in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Thus linked and truly lettered as it was in this land of old) and the alliterative Destruction of Troy (By locking letters that were left of old).
