“Therefore leave the man alone, my dear lord Gawain,
and for Christ’s sake, sir, set off by some other route!
God speed you, go! Just get on your way,
and I shall head home myself; but first hear me promise
what I shall swear before God and all his good saints:
So help me God, the Holy Mother and whoever else!
I will keep your secret safe and certainly never say
that you ever had to flee from any foe I knew.”
“I am grateful,” Gawain said, and gruffly replied,
“I wish you well indeed, for you want to help me,
and I am certain my secret would be safe with you.
But no matter how close you kept it, if I came this far,
then let that fellow frighten me enough to flee as you suggest,
I could only be called a coward; I could not be excused.
I shall chance the Green Chapel, whatever that choice entails,
and tell that terrible knight whatever tale I please.
Whatever future befalls me, I’ll take what fortune grants
or waives.
Though no one ever escapes
that stern fellow or his stave,
yet God can change the shape
of fate itself, and save.”

Sir Gawain's guide advises him to run away, because death awaits him at the Green Chapel.

Gawain is made of sterner stuff.

(Or does he really believe that the Green Girdle will save him, and not God?)
