The purges were largely conducted by the NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs), which functioned as the interior ministry and secret police of the USSR. Starting in 1936, the NKVD under chief Genrikh Yagoda began the removal of the central party leadership, Old Bolsheviks, government officials, and regional party bosses.[10] Soviet politicians who opposed or criticized Stalin were removed from office and imprisoned or executed by the NKVD. Eventually, the purges were expanded to the Red Army and military high command, which had a disastrous effect on the military.[11][12] The campaigns also affected many other categories of society: the intelligentsia, wealthy peasants—especially those lending out money or wealth (kulaks)—and professionals.[13] As the scope of the purge widened, the omnipresent suspicion of saboteurs and counter-revolutionaries, known collectively as wreckers, began affecting civilian life. The purge reached its peak between September 1936 and August 1938, when the NKVD was under chief Nikolai Yezhov, hence the name Yezhovshchina. The campaigns were carried out according to the general line of the party, often by direct orders of the politburo, headed by Stalin.[14] Hundreds of thousands of people were accused of various political crimes (espionage, wrecking, sabotage, anti-Soviet agitation, conspiracies to prepare uprisings and coups, and more). They were executed by shooting, or sent to the Gulag labor camps. The NKVD targeted certain ethnic minorities with particular force, such as the Volga Germans or Soviet citizens of Polish origin, who were subjected to forced deportation and extreme repression. Throughout the purge, the NKVD sought to strengthen control over civilians through fear, and frequently used imprisonment, torture, violent interrogation, and executions during its mass operations.[15]

With Trump back in the Oval Office, Zuckerberg is rebranding the company to go all-in on a MAGA-dominated Washington, shelving Meta’s once-lauded fact-checking program, eliminating DEI initiatives and installing Kaplan as the face of the company’s policy division to replace the liberal-leaning former British politician Nick Clegg. After pledging to stay neutral during the election, Zuckerberg has deepened his relationship with Trump, jetting to Mar-a-Lago for private meetings, green-lighting Meta’s $1 million donation to his inauguration fund, and adding a Trump ally, Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White, to the company’s board.

President Donald Trump in his first week in office slowed down parts of the U.S. government in a quest to assert broad control, as heads of federal agencies turned his executive orders into mandates, cutting communication with outside parties, largely halting foreign aid and pausing legal filings. The Environmental Protection Agency and the departments of Energy, Defense and Health and Human Services abruptly stopped most external communication. The Justice Department’s Environmental and Natural Resources Division ordered attorneys not to file any new complaints. And the U.S. Agency for International Development on Friday issued an order to stop most foreign aid spending. Asked for comment, a White House spokesperson defended the moves as a necessary part of the transition of power. Trump, in executive orders, described the strategy as essential to bringing the sprawling bureaucracy in line with his vision for the nation. “The transfer of political leadership in the United States is one of the most complicated transitions in the entire world,” the White House spokesperson said. “Anything mission critical has not stopped and there is an exceptions process for expedited review if career employees feel an exception is needed.”

The wheels of the US government have ground to a halt in parts under a hail of new orders from Donald Trump that have left vital services paralysed and raised alarm about damaging disruption to key sectors such as health, roads and tax collection. Meetings on cancer research to discuss federal funding and reports on how to fight bird flu were cancelled after the incoming administration placed a halt on all external communication at the health department. The cancellations were reportedly instituted partly to ensure that communications complied with the returning president’s executive order decreeing that his administration would recognise only two genders, according to the Wall Street Journal. One key aim was reportedly to expunge references to “pregnant people” rather than pregnant women, an example of inclusive terminology that has become widespread in the health sector in recent years, to the consternation of rightwing critics who have railed against diversity, equity and inclusiveness (DEI) initiatives.

Chicago school leaders say immigration agents showed up to an elementary school today in what may be the first of such actions since the Trump administration this week reversed federal policy to now permit immigration enforcement inside schools, hospitals and churches. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is denying their agents were involved, spurring confusion about what transpired. ICE agents arrived at John H. Hamline Elementary on Friday morning, according to a letter the school’s principal sent to families, which was reviewed by The Washington Post. But the school refused to let the agents inside, the principal wrote. “Our team followed District protocols, keeping the ICE agents outside of the school and immediately alerting the CPS Law Department and Office of Safety and Security to the situation,” the principal wrote. “In keeping with city, state, and District policies, ICE agents were not allowed into our building at any point and were not permitted to speak with anyone.” The Chicago Public Schools system confirmed in a statement and an interview Friday that immigration agents had showed up to Hamline but were not allowed inside. “The ICE agents said they were [Department of Homeland Security],” said Fanny Diego Alvarez, chief of family and community engagement for the district. ICE, which did not respond to a request for comment from The Washington Post, told other news outlets that “this was not an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement encounter” and suggested asking local law enforcement about the episode. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment. A Chicago police spokesperson said in a statement that his department received no calls for service to Hamline on Friday.

U.S. officials are preparing to send thousands of additional troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, including, potentially, soldiers equipped with 20-ton Stryker combat vehicles, according to four U.S. officials familiar with the planning. The Pentagon is rushing to cobble together options for an operation that President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency. These additional service members and capabilities, if all approved, would vastly expand the military's footprint from Texas to California, where roughly 2,500 troops are positioned to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the detection and apprehension of migrants seeking to enter the United States illegally. Follow live updates on the Trump administration, and we're tracking Trump's progress on campaign promises and his picks for key administration roles. One military official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive and evolving situation, said that some units have received notifications warning that they may be needed to deploy depending on the Trump administration's desires. These efforts would supplement the Pentagon's decision this week to send 1,500 service members to the border to augment the existing force that dates to the Biden administration. Trump has portrayed the flow of people and illegal drugs across America's southern frontier as an invasion that must be met with military might. He has long shown an appetite to employ U.S. troops domestically for demonstrations of force, whether to deter migration or to crack down on civil protests. The effort underway now could include well over 10,000 soldiers and Marines, defense officials said.

Then Trump returned to the “more important” point he had made repeatedly before — about the bad advice. “But you have to understand he had bad advisers on almost everything,” Trump said. “It’s like in the old days when the secretary of state said he never made a correct decision on foreign policy. Joe Biden got very bad advice.” This was clearly a point of emphasis, judging by Trump’s repeating the talking point over and over and making sure he got it in one last time, even when Hannity wanted to move on. Trump for some reason really wanted everyone to remember that Biden not pardoning himself was a bad idea and even pointed to how people could be made to testify fully. He also mentioned how “the money” — it’s not clear what money — went to Biden. It’s not terribly subtle. How to read that? It’s certainly possible this is Trump being provocative. But those who would like to dismiss this as bluster are ignoring plenty of history. And Trump not only seems to have more motivation this time — as he effectively told Hannity — but he’ll be surrounded by people who are more loyal to him. A big problem with Trump’s previous efforts to politicize the justice system was not just the sheer lack of evidence, but the people around him who tried to adhere to the norms. It’s all a marked contrast to after the 2016 election, when Trump at the very least saw value in the perception that he was moving on.

As part of his directives targeting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI), President Donald Trump revoked a landmark executive order signed by Lyndon B. Johnson to prevent discrimination in government employment and advance racial equality. Union leaders and labor advocates have decried the move, with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's three Democratic members saying in a joint statement that rescinding the 1965 order will remove “a source of protection against discrimination for the millions of Americans working for companies that receive federal dollars." "We should be standing up for working Americans, not weakening their civil rights," the members said, noting that the principles of Johnson's Executive Order 11246 “have stood the test of time and remained in place through both Democratic and Republican administrations." Here's what to know about Executive Order 11246 and Trump's reversal:
What is the Equal Employment Opportunity order Trump reversed? Executive Order 11246 directed federal contractors to take “affirmative action” to end discrimination at their firms and gave the Labor Department enforcement authority over violations found by the EEOC. It was one in a series of laws and executive orders that codified the employment protections that have existed for the American workforce for decades.. The policy was considered a major step in the federal government's effort to foster racial equality, coming one year after Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which created the EEOC, tasked with eliminating unlawful employment discrimination in the private and public sectors. It eventually led to the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972, which expanded the reach and authority of the EEOC. Subsequent laws and executive orders built upon these policies, extending employment protections to not just race, sex, color, religion and national origin, but also sexual orientation, gender identity, disability and status as a protected veteran.
