🧊 A glimpse into a collapsing glacier 🧊
On the #Morteratsch #Glacier, we found a large collapsed #icecave just 100 m from the front, a sign of ongoing disintegration. The front cave connects to the collapse zone, letting us document it from above, the sides, and inside. #Cryosphere #ClimateChange
In 4 years, the front of the #Morteratsch Glacier retreated sharply due to a very negative mass balance, collapsing ice caves, and a relatively flat bedrock. It now terminates in a ~30 m-high ice cliff. Notice also the central surface collapse in 2025 (ice cave collapse).

An ice lamella collapsing at #Morteratsch #glacier over the weekend. ❄️ The footage serves as a reminder that while ice caves are breathtaking natural wonders, they are temporary by nature, and eventually destined to collapse. 🧊🫧 Entering them is always a risk.
A steep, overhanging ice cliff now marks the terminus of the #Morteratsch glacier. During yesterday’s field campaign, our #VAW team installed a new monitoring camera and measured stream temperatures. Striking to witness the glacier’s dramatic transformation firsthand.

View from Morteratsch station, towards what in 1908 used to be the end of the glacier tongue. It is now a flat plain, overgrown with alpine trees, mostly conifers. It is early June, all the plants are vibrantly green. In the far back, snowed Alps can be seen.
View over an empty glacial U valley. The glacier has receded long ago, enough for the trees to start growing in the old ice bed. It now only shows in the end of the valley, where it is still connected to the fresh snow from Alpine peaks. It is early June, the trees are green, the Alps still fully covered with snow.
Fifth day of the previous year's #Switzerland trip. Taking the Bernina Line, highest railway crossing in Europe, one of the steepest in the world. We went from #SanktMoritz to #Tirano, and then changed to a regular Italian train to #Milano.
