Title: The Wrong Husband

Author: L. Steele

Narrated in duet by: Shane East and Mackenzie Cartwright

*****Book review*****

>Combating Ghosts and Grandfathers<

Oh, the things that brew between Dr. Phoenix (Phe) Hamilton and Connor Davenport. For good, bad, or steamy, I'm along for the ride!

She needs to figure out a way to slow down and address the things in her life that she's been avoiding for months and years. He is being pushed into a corner and, like all the other Davenports, needs to marry to do what he desires with his inheritance. Thus, the marriage of convenience plot takes form.

-- Book quote
'Tall. Commanding. He hijacks my attention like he’s a force of nature.'
-- Phoenix Hamilton

They are a bit of an odd couple, but one that I like together. I like that he makes an effort to woo her after his initial, bumbled attempt at a marriage of convenience proposal. I like the ways they challenge each other and show their support.

The Drew storyline gets a little... weird. I honestly think the story could've done without the extra special twist. It is a different perspective, but it didn't seem to completely fit in with the rest of the story.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. I really like the narrators, Mackenzie Cartwright and Shane East. It's made even better because they're in duet! 😍 🎧❀️🎧

******Book review*******

>Winds of Change<

It's easy to like Cassidy Forrester and Dash Kingston. Sure, he's a rockstar and has indulged in many women before, but I love that he recognizes Cassidy is in a class of her own. I may not like how he initially handles things, but he gets his act together splendidly. And the steam that billows from their unions.... ❀️‍πŸ”₯

-- Book quote
'The man across from her wasn’t the cocky rock star who strutted around on stage like he owned the world. This Dash Kingston appeared to be a mere mortal, not a rock god. He was a man who’d been humbled by his actions.'
-- Cassidy Forrester

As for her, I like how we get to see her vulnerability when it comes to Adam. It's a normal reaction to the situation, even if the relationship had faded into obscurity. I also like how she is giving but won't let people walk all over her.

I love how this brings the Dare family and other prior characters back into the conversation. We've met some of the "Dirty Dares" here and there throughout the various series. I'm really looking forward to the connection that's coming!

I borrowed the audio book. The narrators, Connor Crais and Mackenzie Cartwright, are both good and easy to listen to. I've listened to both many, many times and always enjoy them. 🎧🩷🎧

>Doomed to Repeat the Past?<

Xander Kingston and Alexandra (Sasha) Keaton definitely had a rocky past. Despite being in a relationship previously, including having lived together, it becomes obvious that they didn't really know each other then. It's not exactly uncommon to be focused more on self than each other at that age and stage of life. Still....

I did like this. I liked how their chemistry and some danger kind of forced them to revisit things, putting some to bed (literally and figuratively) with tentative resolutions and others ignored for their future selves to deal with. OK, I wasn't as fond of the latter, but that drama llama gets hers.

I do like how their friends and family are there in good times and bad. Those, as well as the hot and heavy fun times, are the elements that keep me coming back to Carly's books.

I borrowed the audio book. The narrators, Connor Crais and Mackenzie Cartwright, continue to deliver good, easy to listen to performances.

>Love Shouldn't Be Safe<

Love shouldn't be safe, a lesson she learns the hard way. It should make you feel safe, sure, but taking a risk is part of the fun.

Before the epilogue, there was a sense of foreboding in 'Just One Night' that Chloe Kingston's wedding wasn't going to go as she expected. The fact that Beckett "Beck" Daniels would be the one to step in and save the day? πŸ€”πŸ«£ I had my suspicions that this would be his way into the family. I can't say I'm angry about it. 😘

-- Book quote
'She was a vision with her blond hair tumbling over her shoulders and the body of a goddess.

He swallowed a low groan of desire just as she reached for the back hook of her bra.'
-- Beck Daniels

I love that Beck is a stand-up guy, even when he's a bit of a jerk. We get to see his soft side when it comes to his family and treasured employees, but we also see some of his illogical reactions to a couple of things. I think we all have a subject or two that causes us to throw all logic aside and act on fear, anger, or some other powerful emotion.

For Chloe, I appreciate that she takes time to evaluate her life choices and course corrects. I love that she takes a few risks and finally starts doing what makes her happy.

I like the turn that takes place between Linc and Beck. I also like that he recognizes what would've happened that fateful night had some roles been reversed. What I don't like, and I get that society struggles with the concept when it's a man, is that Linc was sexually assaulted, and no one is willing to say the tough words aloud.

I love that Chloe's story is integrated with her brothers versus being a side story. Too often, the sisters of the series get second fiddle status. This is a step in the right direction. πŸ‘

This is a standalone, but at least reading book one in this series is my recommendation. There are a couple of Dare family members and friends that have cameo appearances or mentions, but reading those isn't req…

>Family Secrets and Acceptance<

He's a bit of a jackass, but I like Linc Kingston. His attraction to her, despite being besties for ages, seems to grow with every passing day. For her part, Jordan Greene has never been immune to the man. I like how they balance each other.

-- Book quote
'Gone was the man who’d been able to keep their relationship strictly in the friend zone. In its place was a heady desire he hadn’t been able to fight.'
-- Linc Kingston

I need to take a moment and turn the spotlight on Melly Kingston. She proves repeatedly to be an amazing woman and wonderful role model. Her choice of husband aside, she's the kind of person I strive to be - open, accepting, and not willing to put the flaws of a DNA material donor on a child. I hope she gets a chance at a real partnership down the road. Well, as real as a fictional character can get. 😊

OK, so back to the couple du jour. There are some triggers / content warnings: loss of pregnancy, sexual assault (F -> M). I do love that each knows they can count on the other's unwavering support through the good and bad. The acceptance is special. πŸ’šπŸ©΅

There are some editing issues, i.e., Jordan knows he was once close to Beck & is later surprised they were close; Suzanne's reason for being loyal to Linc is unnecessarily stated almost verbatim by Jordan and Suzanne. Otherwise, I found this to be a pretty solid read. Perhaps a little predictable and repetitive, especially if you've read 'Dare to Stay', but still enjoyable and entertaining.

I read along with the audio book. The narrators are Connor Crais and Mackenzie Cartwright. I have enjoyed listening to Connor many times over the years, and this is a good example of why. Mackenzie was also easy to listen to. Duet would've been perfection, but this'll do. 😘 🎧🩷🎧
