A calm ocean in the background fades to a summer haze on the horizon. The rocks are layered and swirled. Their size is evident by the people on the right, taking respite from the sun in the shade, and some sitting on the rocks, taking in the ocean view.

The 2019 movie is a sort of crazy, mystery, horror movie set on a remote New England island.

Monochrome image of pier pilings in Rockland Harbor, Maine in winter. There are seagulls perched on three of the posts. The water is gently rippled and shadowed. In the distant background, the breakwater stretches out into the harbor, ending with the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. Beyond that is more coastline. The Harbor leads out to Penobscot Bay, not visible, to the right.

A boat named "Tiger Shark" with a bright red hull is docked in Bar Harbor, Maine. The schooner Margaret Todd, with four tall masts topped with flags, is docked behind. There is a crowd of people on the pier waiting to board the schooner. Only the red hull is in color as I was having a little fun with filters. The rest of the photo is monochrome. One of the Porcupine Islands provides a prominent backdrop to the scene. The island appears to be in a bit of fog and there are thick clouds above and beyond the island.

The Maine coast in early March has this strange quiet to it.

The tourists aren’t back yet. The harbor is gray and calm. The lobster boats are out before sunrise.

It’s the perfect weather for writing cozy stories about seaside towns and stubbornly romantic people. πŸŒŠπŸ“š

Monochrome image of the top of a lighthouse view of Muscongus and Penobscot Bays from inside the Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, Maine. Through two angled windows, we see the bays and Hupper Island to the right and a clear sky. The original 5th order Fresnel lens was removed by the Coast Guard in 1971 and disappeared from the Rockland Coast Guard Station in 1974. It is still missing. The automated barrel lens that replaced the 5th order lens is displayed in the Marshall Point Lighthouse museum. An LED light encased in plastic was installed in 2018. The current light, in a barrel shape, is shiny and reflective at the right of the photo.

A great ridge of rock extends far into the sea. There is snow in some of the crevices. The sea looks deceivingly calm as it rolls and crashes against the rocks with the incoming tide. The sun sparkles brightly in the distance. The clouds are scattered and in various shapes of lines, wisps, and ribs. Pemaquid Point, Maine USA

A wave crashes on the rocky shore. There are bits of snow still in the rocks. The sea rolls white near the shore and is deep, cold winter blue to the horizon. The blue contrasts with the warm browns of the sunlit rocks. The sky is a paler blue with scattered white clouds. On the left horizon, Monhegan Island appears perched on the surface of the sea, seeming very close and clear, though it's about 10 miles away.

Fort Popham (from their website):
Fort Popham is a semi-circular granite fort that was never completed, though construction began in 1862 for use during the Civil War. Modifications were made, and the fort was used again in the Spanish American War and in World War 1. Historical records conclude that fortifications, probably wooden, existed here and protected the Kennebec settlements during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It was nearby that the English made their first attempt to colonize New England in 1607.

Monochrome image showing an end of the fort with its rough cut granite blocks and what looks like a steel framed window. There are some dried weeds growing from the crevices.
It is low tide, and there are circles of ice at the base of the wall. The rocks of the shore next to the fort have snow on the top and seaweed at the base. Calm waters of the Kennebec River lead to the opposite shore where trees and houses are visible. The sky is gray with flat clouds.

This is where the Kennebec reaches the Atlantic ocean.

Winter By The Sea..

Winter by the sea
Oh, the life of openness
Something within me
Full of cold caress
I am like a traveler
Going to my desires
A weaving sea dweller
Never of the sea tires

Come as you may
Oh, Wintry north chill
Dreams won't go away
Thou coldness you fill
My days and hours
I will be like the glow
That rises the flowers
After freezing snow

Winter of the sea
In all your loneliness
You always are free
Weaving harmonious
North summer rises
In beauty and wild
With all its surprises
In enigmatic beguiled

Peter S. Quinn
