Mandera drills boreholes to address severe water shortage As the drought situation intensifies across Mandera County with scorching temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius, the county government has embarked on a drought mitigation initiative to ameliorate the water shortage menace. The initiative includes drilling boreholes in the hardest-hit areas, particularly Mandera West and Banissa Sub-Counties, to provide much-needed water for residents and livestock. **Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif commissioning a borehole with a capacity of 8 cubic meters per hour in Birkan Banissa.** In Mandera West’s Burmayo area, a newly drilled and fully functional borehole is already supplying water to the community, easing the burden of water scarcity. Meanwhile, in Banissa’s Birkan area, the county government has successfully drilled another borehole with a capacity of 8 cubic meters per hour. The borehole is equipped with a generator, two Kettlewell troughs for livestock and a 2-kilometre pipeline extending to the Birkan centre, supplying water to businesses and serving over 2,000 households. Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, while launching the boreholes, emphasized the county government’s commitment to ensuring water accessibility for all residents. “It is our duty as a government to provide water to our people, especially during such harsh climate conditions,” he stated. The Governor further announced plans to establish emergency boreholes to sustain the large livestock population in the region. “We will not stop here; we are working on more emergency boreholes to ensure that no household or livestock suffers from thirst,” he added. Area residents expressed their gratitude for the timely intervention, acknowledging the county government’s efforts in addressing the water crisis. “This borehole has come at the most critical time. We are grateful for this life-saving project,” Mohammed Yusuf, a resident, remarked. The ongoing drought has severely impacted Mandera West, Banissa, and Mandera North Sub-Counties, exacerbating water shortages and putting livelihoods at risk. Women in Mandera Unite to end FGM <p>Mandera County women have come together in a collective effort to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice that has for long affected young girls in the region.</p> <p>FGM champions, mostly women, are calling for the total eradication of the harmful tradition and are urging fellow women to reject it.</p> <p>While marking the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, mothers who have often been blamed for upholding the retrogressive culture are now at the forefront of advocating for its end.</p> <p>Local residents have also joined the movement, strongly condemning the practice and emphasizing the need for urgent action to protect young girls.</p> <p>Women in the county have expressed concerns that young girls lived in fear, not sure of their future due to societal neglect should they refuse to undergo FGM.</p> <p>Dr. Aisha Hussein, a medical practitioner at Mandera County Referral Hospital, warned of the severe health risks associated with FGM, stressing that the complications cannot be ignored.</p> <p>“FGM has devastating health consequences, including infections, complications in childbirth, and even death. It is a practice that we must eliminate,” she stated.</p> <p>She called upon women to rally in large numbers to spread awareness and educate communities about the dangers of the practice.</p> <p>“Women must take the lead in protecting their daughters. We need to speak up, educate our communities, and ensure that this harmful tradition is abandoned for good,” she urged.</p> <p>Speaking at the event, Mandera Assistant County Commissioner Patrick Messo issued a stern warning to parents involved in FGM, stating that they would face severe legal consequences.</p> <p>He also urged local leaders to report any cases of FGM to authorities, to ensure swift action against perpetrators.</p> <p>Messo emphasized that FGM could lead to fatal health complications for girls, making it imperative to eradicate the practice.</p> <p>Various organizations and civil society institutions across Mandera County have been actively involved in fighting FGM, making a significant impact in communities where the practice remains prevalent.
