Our study on beaches (Leizhou Peninsula, China) shows plastic dominates marine macrolitter (~85%), with strong differences between type of beaches. Recreation was the main source. Overall pollution and hazard levels were low.

The area around nesting ground and on the gorgonians is also littered with lost fishing gear and other debris.

When breeding is this spatially concentrated, #marinelitter isn’t background noise – it’s direct pressure on a critical life stage.

Same area, but now with the pressure visible: longlines, ropes and other fishing gear litter entangling gorgonians and covering the seabed. Chronic ghost fishing and structural damage that we urgently need to address.

Overflowing bins on Greek beaches in November.
We clean only during tourism season, when the money flows.
After that, our coasts are forgotten.
Winter storms will carry this straight into the sea.
Our beaches need year-round care, not seasonal cleanup. 🌊

A row of wooden groyne (?) beams on a beach in Zeeland with low rising dunes on the background has caught a piece of a drifting fishing net. The bright blue of the net is in stark contrast to the black and green colour of the beams against the sand illuminated by a sunset and with blue sky and a rising half moon in the background. After taking the picture, we took the net off and brought it to the nearest bin.

Sickening to see a clump of monofilament line trapped around and damaging the dorsal fin of this Risso's Dolphin off Trondra today.

Monofilament is a silent killer of wildlife.

Whoever discarded this clearly just doesn't care.

Sadly it was heavily entangled in rope, it’s state of decomposition meant that a necropsy couldn’t be undertaken.
