NASA Announces SR-1 Freedom, a Nuclear-Powered Spacecraft Designed to Deliver Skyfall Helicopters to Mars in 2028 On March 24, 2026, NASA announced an ambitious new project called Space Reactor 1 (SR-1) Freedom — an interplanetary spacecraft powered by a fission reactor.
