Saw this carved stone cross at Clonmacnoise yesterday. Does any else see a Xenomorph on the side of the cross? 🤔

Enjoyed yesterday's outing to Clonmacnoise with @tuatha.ie! Driving up, the weather was quite wet but it turned out to be a spectacular day - I needed sunglasses, which I very handily left in the car. 😎😅

Gave a talk on early medieval Irish beekeeping laws last Tuesday evening to an audience that included a Zoologist specialising in honeybee genetics as well as some practising beekeepers...no pressure then! I learned some new things about bees in turn😃 #medievalireland #brehon #bees #bechbretha

My review of Patrick Gleeson's tremendous book 'Landscapes of Kingship in Early Medieval Ireland AD 400-1150' (IrishTimes 23/08/25). Very hard to do it proper justice in 800 words, but already it has led me to redesign my medieval Irish lecture modules @historyatgalway.bsky.social #medievalireland.

A low-angle shot shows a vaulted stone corridor underneath Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. The corridor has rough-hewn stone walls and a matching ceiling, with a clean stone floor. Two black wrought iron gates are open in the foreground, inviting the viewer deeper into the scene. A large wooden door is visible at the end of the corridor, bathed in a warm light from a single bulb. The light casts long, dramatic shadows across the floor.

Today's #MomentofTranquility: Clontuskert Friary in County Galway. Founded in the 12th century and restored in the 15th century after a large fire. Then came the Dissolution, a partial restoration in the 17th century, and the OPW took over in the 1970's.

Today's #MomentofTranquility: Bridgetown Abbey. The ruins of this 13th century abbey in county Cork are a serious contender for one of the most tranquil sites in Ireland. There were no cars, no voices, no traffic. Just birds and a gentle river.

Timahoe's Round Tower has stood since the 1100s. It was built on the site of a monastery founded by Saint Mochua sometime around 600 CE. I wonder what the world looked like from those upper windows back then.

Founded in 1272, Hore Abbey was Ireland's last Cistercian monastery. It had a Gothic church, a tower, cloister, and living quarters for the monks. Today, its ruins are incredibly tranquil, a great place to think, and one of my happy places.

CFP: Gaelic Ireland, 1200–1600: Papers in Honor of Kieran D. O'Conor
ICMS 2026
Sponsor: American Society for Irish Medieval Studies
Organizer: Margaret K. Smith, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

This panel honors the career of Dr. Kieran D. O’Conor, an archaeologist of medieval Ireland whose research has transformed our understanding of Gaelic Ireland in the aftermath of the Anglo-Norman conquest. His contributions have added depth and nuance to our understanding of castles as sites of both authority and daily life, and his work attends to the complex relationships between lordly landscapes and the lives of ordinary people who inhabited and shaped them. This session solicits papers on Gaelic Ireland, particularly those that highlight the social implications of landscapes and material culture.

This is an in-person session. Please submit abstracts of 300 words via the ICMS Confex system:
