We're heading north today to visit Dalton Castle, Cumbria.
This 14th century tower was the former manorial courthouse of Furness Abbey.
The building contained not only the courtroom and other rooms where the lordship's business was conducted but also a gaol, guardrooms & stores.

An old favourite for #FindsFriday - the pilgrim badge from Bodiam Castle! Found in the moat in 1970, it came from a long forgotten place of pilgrimage - the ‘Holy Rood of Bermondsey’.

It wouldn’t be #MedievalMarch without a visit to a castle!

Rayleigh was the only castle in Essex mentioned in Domesday in 1086, and like most Norman castles began life as a timber structure on top of an earthen mound (motte). 🧵

A painterly scene depicts three armored figures walking away from the viewer across a narrow stone bridge, their backs turned as they move toward a fortified structure ahead. The bridge is built of uneven, weathered stones, its surface mottled with pale grays and soft browns, suggesting age and long use. Low stone walls line either side, guiding the eye forward into mist and distance. The figures are clad in medieval armor, chainmail visible beneath plate elements, with rounded helmets that reflect muted light. One wears a faded red surcoat, while the others are dressed in subdued steel and gray tones, their gear marked by wear rather than polish.

Their strides are steady and unhurried, spaced close enough to imply unity and shared purpose. Belts, pouches, and scabbards hang at their sides, rendered with loose, expressive brushstrokes that favor texture over detail. Ahead, partially obscured by fog, stands a stone building with a tiled roof, its walls softened by atmospheric haze. Small human figures appear near the structure, barely defined, adding scale and quiet narrative tension.

The background dissolves into cool blues and grays, as if mist or smoke hangs in the air, blurring the boundary between landscape and sky. The overall style resembles a watercolor or oil wash, with visible brush textures and softened edges. The mood is contemplative rather than heroic, focusing on movement, companionship, and the subdued gravity of a journey undertaken together.

Excavations in Room 28 of Chedworth Roman Villa recovered bone and charcoal sealed within a foundation trench in the north range.
Radiocarbon dates show that the wall could not have been built until after AD 424, so the mosaic must be later than this date.

The property collections team discovered it was installed in the garden by the Messel family in 1902. It's thought to be Italian, so may have been imported to the property along with other items.

The ancient, moated manor of Baddesley Clinton, the home of the Ferrers family for 500 years, dates from the 15th century.

Today, you can see an example of medieval stewponds in the garden. They were connected by a system of wooden pipes to the moat.

The millpond with Bodiam Castle in the background. The water is still with reflections of trees and the castle.

The Millpond at Bodiam, East Sussex, is dated to the late 14th century.
During the early 20th century, the area was misidentified by Lord Curzon as a ‘tilt-yard’ (an area for jousting).
In stormy periods, the millpond still floods, as seen in this image from 2014.
