Pewter medieval pilgrim badge of a crucifix

Pewter medieval pilgrim badge of a crucifix

An old favourite for #FindsFriday - the pilgrim badge from Bodiam Castle! Found in the moat in 1970, it came from a long forgotten place of pilgrimage - the ‘Holy Rood of Bermondsey’.

Find it at the Castle Cottage Museum.

Bodiam Castle in spring

Welcome to #MedievalMarch exploring some of our medieval places & collections, starting with perhaps the most iconic of castles, Bodiam.

We’re celebrating a significant anniversary - we have cared for the castle for 100 years, since it was bequeathed to @nationaltrust.org.uk in 1926.

A look back on the dig at #Bodiam during August 2025: our team of over 140 volunteers found evidence for #Roman & #medieval activity across the landscape. Our final season of excavations at the site is this summer - watch this space!

The deepest excavation in Trench 14 recorded a large paleo channel used for drainage during the 19th & 20th centuries. Environmental sampling will help us to understand more & inform future land management. The discovery of a worked stake rounded off a very successful field season!

Sunset over Dokes Field to the north of Bodiam Castle. The sky is cloudy with hues of yellow, orange and pink over the trees on the horizon. There is a large tree in the left of the field and a small tent to the right. These roughly mark the alignment of the Roman routeway which runs through the field.

Our very impressive door for Day 19 of #ArchaeologyAdvent is none other than the entrance to #BodiamCastle; the portcullis dates from the time of the castle's construction in the late 14th century.
