A pastel drawing depicting a hand sketching the transit of Mercury across the Sun. The artist's hand is visible, holding a pencil, and drawing onto a surface that represents the sun, with a small black circle representing Mercury. The colors are predominantly warm oranges and browns, evoking the warmth and light of the Sun. The style is impressionistic, capturing the artist's visual experience of the event.

A composite image showcasing the path of Mercury across the evening sky over Leeds, England in March 2004. Each point of light represents Mercury's position 33 minutes after sunset on a different day. A crescent moon is visible in the lower left corner, with a cityscape silhouetted against the twilight horizon. The image beautifully demonstrates Mercury's close proximity to the sun and its challenging visibility from Earth.

Mosaic image of Mercury transiting the sun from November 1999. Dark silhouettes of Mercury are visible against the bright surface of the sun. This illustrates a similar event to the upcoming rare Venus transit which hasn't happened in over a century. Remember to never look directly at the sun.

A slightly different take on today's #MercuryTransit 😂

0 0 0 0

For today's #MercuryTransit, 3 things you might not know about #Mercury:

1. Despite daytime temps over 400C, water ice has been found on its surface.
2. Two probes have visited: Mariner 10 (1975) and MESSENGER (2011-15)
3. Two solar system moons (Ganymede & Titan) are bigger.

Mercury is about 30% bigger across than the #Moon is (~4880 km vs 3475), but it's over 260 times farther away (102,000,00 km vs 384,000). So, while the #Moon can completely cover the Sun, Mercury looks like just a tiny dot from our POV here. #MercuryTransit #Space
