At the end of the day, the Sierra Nevada gave me one of those moments you can’t plan. After hours on the road, we hiked to a lookout just in time to watch the sun go down. The ridges faded into layers of orange and blue, the air was hazy, and everything grew quiet. I set my camera on a rock, but most of the time I just sat there with my friends. Sunsets in the mountains are different — not the loud show you sometimes get on the ocean, but a slow fading, ridge after ridge, until it’s dark. It wasn’t dramatic compared to Yosemite or the desert, but it’s one of those memories that comes back quickly when I look at the photo. Arriving in Yosemite felt like finally reaching the heart of the road trip. After endless desert and highways, suddenly there were granite walls, pine trees, and the famous dome standing at the end of the valley. Of course, I took the classic shots — who doesn’t? But on this Belvedere I stopped for something smaller: a handful of flowers growing out of cracks in the granite. Behind them, Half Dome stood massive and eternal. That contrast stayed with me. Fragile life holding on for a short season, and timeless, steep stone watching from behind. We didn’t go up the normal way. Instead, we climbed Half Dome through Snake Dike, one of the long granite ridges on the side of the mountain. It’s not a hard climb technically, but it’s exposed, and the feeling of moving up that endless grey slab with so much air around you is unforgettable. After hours on the ridge, we reached the summit plateau just as the light was shifting. From up there, Yosemite opened in every direction — domes, cliffs, and the valley far below. We went down the famous cables, which felt almost as intimidating as climbing up. Gripping the metal, stepping carefully, looking back at the line of hikers behind us. First real stop on the way west: Meteor Crater in Arizona. I had seen photos before, but standing at the rim was something else. A massive hole in the middle of the desert, created 50,000 years ago by an asteroid maybe 50 meters wide. One second of impact, and now a crater more than a kilometer across.
