Another sharp and necessary intervention by @jtheilen.bsky.social. If we’re serious about dismantling violent border regimes, we need to confront the structural conservatism of human rights law, not just celebrate its occasional victories #migsky #openaccess

Do human rights provide a progressive counterpoint to migration law?
In this article, I highlight their structurally conservative side & argue that the European Court of Human Rights legitimates the foundations of border regimes even when finding rights violations #migsky

Any recs for an NGO or community org working in the US-Mexico border region that could use inexperienced volunteer help?
I have a sharp undergrad who wants to volunteer this summer in the region, but is mindful of their lack of experience and wants to learn but be useful and not in the way. #migsky

Can we #migsky commentators at least point out routinely that people with DACA status are *documented*? They took a leap of faith and provided detailed personal info. Not to reinforce the good/bad dichotomy but to underscore its fundamental flaws (hence word salad ⬇️)

⬇️ Similar dynamic—resentment of newcomers, not their nationality—drove violent xenophobia in South Africa. Just another reminder to look beyond US to understand US #MigSky
👋 #polisky #migsky what am I overlooking? I’m teaching an interdisciplinary intro level course on US immigration politics and policies but cannot find anything to assign as a quasi textbook (for either half). Most books are written for specialists or are too deeply historical. TYIA for leads!
Marie & Pinotti (2024): Very important paper, also in light of the policy debates in many countries:
- Immigration does not increase crime rates.
- Obtaining legal status decreases immigrants' involvement in criminal activities.
