A photo of a cackling goose (Branta hutchinsii), a goose very similar in appearance to a Canada goose but smaller overall and with shorter proportions. It has a distinctive black head and neck with a white chinstrap marking, a faint white ring at the bottom of its neck, grayish-brown upper body, and pale underside. It is floating, facing to the right, on still water that reflects green shore vegetation and is speckled with small bits of debris. This bird is a bit unusual in that flecks of white are visible throughout the black coloring on its neck.

Another bird of the #MildlyInteresting variety at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden yesterday: Cackling goose with flecks of white throughout the black on its neck, that was all by itself and got bullied by some Canada geese. I don't know if it is more likely to be a hybrid or leucistic?
