Junco in the Sassafras Most birders I know prefer the excitement of rarities. Something bright, something unusual. A lifer. A surprise. They like the chase. I like that too. But lately I’ve found myself drawn more to the familiar. The birds that don’t leave. The ones that show up, not once, but every day. The birds outside my kitchen window. We’d just come back from a frigid birding trip to Ithaca. Stewark Lake, Cayuga Lake. The kind of cold that gets into your bones and stays there. Wind blowing snow sideways into the lens. My fingers numb on the camera. No Mute Swan, which was the bird I was hoping to find. Just open water and stubborn gulls. It felt like birding as endurance sport. The next morning, I didn’t even go outside. I just stood next to the kitchen table and looked out the window. The feeder hung from the Sassafras tree, and like clockwork, the birds arrived: a couple Downy Woodpeckers, and at least three Dark-eyed Juncos. They’re not flashy. In fact, the juncos seem dressed for the weather—grey on grey, like they were designed by someone who’d given up on colour. But they have a kind of precision to them. Their markings are neat. Their movements sharp. I watched one hop along a branch and flick its tail, the white outer feathers flashing like Morse code. Our cat, Alphonso Mango, sat on the kitchen table, his eyes locked onto the junco. His tail twitched, but he didn’t move otherwise. He’s an indoor cat, which is good news for the birds and maybe for him too. He can admire them the same way I do—safely, from behind glass. I grabbed my camera and telephoto lens. A bird had landed on a curved branch, almost too perfectly. The light caught just enough texture in its feathers to make them look touchable. You could see the slight puff of its belly, the fine edge where grey gave way to white. There was nothing dramatic about it. No action. No prey. No motion blur. Just a small bird, still and alert. When you look at a junco long enough, you stop thinking about how common it is. You start noticing how often it appears. Not just in backyards, but in moments like this—quiet ones, ordinary ones. A bird like that doesn’t need to surprise you to be worth watching. It just needs to keep showing up. ### Like this: Like Loading...
