Pietra dura table top Italian, Rome late 16th or early 17th century
Why don't we make table tops with a design like this 16th/17th c. table anymore❓
These features are typical of Rome in the years around 1600 and distinguish the tabletop from Florentine examples.

MOSAIC FLOOR WITH CRUSTÆ, C1 BCE. SCAVI SOTTO S. CECILIA This complex site began as a domus in the C2-C1 BCE, and in the C2 CE an insula was built onto the domus, evidently a comfortable one as it had its own set of baths, much like the Caseggiato degli Aurighi at Ostia. There are mosaic floors at the C2 CE ground level but here we see a cut into that level which reveals a C1 BCE mosaic about 50 cm lower down. This mosaic, interrupted by a C2 CE wall, has a white background and a simple black frame. Within it at relatively even intervals are larger irregular coloured marble pieces known as crustæ. This style echoes the first mosaic pavement of the temple of Capitoline Jupiter, a marker of prestige. At the centre of the mosaic is a kantharos or vase in black tesseræ.
#MosaicMonday takes us into the confusing excavations under #SantaCecilia in #Trastevere to find this #mosaic floor from the C1 BCE, from a #domus on the site that was built over with an #insula in the C2 CE. It has a #kantharos at centre, but otherwise uses coloured #crustæ. #AncientBluesky 🏺

#MosaicMonday - The Mosaic of the Captives, depicting a captive family crouching with their hands bound. The central panel is surrounded by twelve portraits of Africans. The mosaic occupied the apse of the Civil Basilica in Tipasa (Algeria). Dated ca. AD 200-300.

A mosaic pavement outside a window carries the black letters THE OXTED DAIRY that is shaped around the bow window’s contours. The dairy is long gone and the shop is now occupied by a fashion outfit. Camera: iPhone 15 Pro.
The name of a former shop H.E. BROCKES & SON NEWSAGENT STSTIONERS. is spelled out in mosaics at the entrance to the property. Brockes closed a few years ago after 100 years. They also offered toys, post office services and books in their time. Part of the mosaic has been worn away by a century of customer footfall. Camera: iPhone 15 Pro.
Most entries for #MosaicMonday are much older, even ancient but these are also historic remnants of a lost age of shopping in my local town. One was outside a shop where my lovely wife worked in the book department. The other a lost dairy.

A fragment of Roman mosaic mounted on a low brick wall. It shows the bust of a naked man with his hair worn in a top-knot. The bust is in an octagonal compartment with a black and white striped border.
For this #MosaicMonday, a handsome - and larger-than-life - athlete in the museum in Aquileia. The supporting brick wall in the display gives an idea of his size. The fragment is about the height of a person.

Photograph shows inside of the main bar at Philharmonic Dining Room, showing large empty floor space and a rounded bar, with brass foot rail. The floor is made from small tessellae in mosaic, mostly cream-coloured with deep red, beige and Prussian-blue pattern in a large repeated circle-of-four motif. Within the cream area of the main floor, there are multiple small, two-leaved, single flowers in mosaic scattered about. Around the bar, below waist height, is the repeated mosaics of a three-stemmed #fleur-de-lys style bunch of flower stems, with a deep red or maroon background and gold, deep blue & pale blue tiled design. There are additional flourishes in light brown between the repeating motif instances.
A bit different for today’s #MosaicMonday I think, but still amazing work… I was in #Liverpool on Saturday night & went to a pub called ‘Philharmonic Dining arooms’ near to the #Phil concert hall, and was astonished by the main bar decor, as below with the all-important #altText

In the foreground, one of 4 columns that supported a pergola at House of Mosaic Columns in Pompeii, with a section of geometric designs at the bottom, followed by a floral design over that and a band with a Dionysiac scene featuring deer and erotes. On the wall behind the column is a large lararium - a focus for worship of household gods. A niche in the centre is framed with stage like design and panels of geometric designs around the top three edges. At the bottom below the niche is a panel with a hen and chicks. To the right of the lararium can be seen a portion of another mosaic panel with a guilloche border and candellabra, plus a red panel near the top with erotes.

This 5th century CE Mosaic showcases Thalassa surrounded by the sea and frolicking Erotes. Thalassa is reclining in the sea and holds a fish in one hand and an oar in the other. This mosaic can be found in the Hatay Archaeological Museum, Türkiye.
✨Thalassa, divine personification of the sea✨
Thalassa is thought to have mythological connections to the Mesopotamian goddess Tiamet, as well as the Titan Tethys, which further connects Thalassa as a potential mother of Aphrodite.

This eerie mosaic depicts Winter holding a bare branch and wearing a birrus (a hooded cloak used extensively in ancient Britain). Its use of cool blue colours, the seeming melancholy in the face & the sparse pale background really conveys the cold barrenness of winter.
