#English He was the last great Assyrian king. History has it that he was a great patron (he built a library with 100,000 documents), but he was also a ruthless king (an example of this was the destruction of Elam), a lover of hunting and his great mastiff dogs. All this was King Ashurbanipal who lived in the 7th century BC; to demonstrate how powerful he was, he left to posterity the enormous palace of Nineveh, completed in 640 BC, whose walls are a celebration of the greatness of this ruler. In particular, the lion hunting scenes are incredibly detailed, with the entourage of soldiers, eunuchs and dogs, so much so that you can see the muscles and ribs of these large hunting dogs. I wrote about this (and much more) on ORIGINS - In search of ancient dog breeds, online in paperback and electronic format, in English, Italian, Spanish, French, Russian.
