This is a sample of the amazing views as we descended from The Monastery, a huge edifice the #Nabataeans carved out of a sandstone mountain
In the valley below are tombs for royalty. Above, you just make out the nearby town of #WadiMusa

Here’s a version of the classic view of ‘The Treasury’ as you emerge from the Siq, a 1km long narrow canyon. This is the ‘Indiana Jones’ view This photo is enhanced by the morning sunlight warming the face of the elaborate carved sandstone edifice.
Here’s a shot of some of the elaborate architectural details the Nabataeans carved into the sandstone. As traders and contemporaries of the Greeks, Romans, and late-period Egyptians, the Nabataeans liberally incorporated figures and design elements from these cultures.
A gorgeous view framed by the narrow canyon walls and capped by a signature Jordanian blue sky, enhanced by thin wisps of clouds.
A full view of ‘The Treasury’ with tourists in the foreground for scale and context. It’s noteworthy that, while ‘The Treasury’ is the most famous edifice in Petra, it is not the largest. High above Petra’s main valley, is another, larger edifice, called ‘The Monastery’. Ironically, neither of these actually functioned as they have been named. They are thought to have been massive tombs or ceremonial sites.
For #Stunday, I’m going to the archive for classic shots of ‘The Treasury’ at #PetraJordan

Shoreline of the #RedSea at the Khraibeh Beach شاطئ الخريبة, #SaudiArabia, one of the possible sites of #Nabataeans' ports "Luke Come". A port from the 4th BCE to the later #Islamic periods as a port of pilgrims from #Cairo as late as the 18th century.
A photograph of the Diwan site (IGN16) in the Ithlib area of Hegra archaeological site. The site consists of a cubical chamber carved into the natural rock face, about twice the height of a person, with columnar edges and stone benches inside. The rock face is overhanging and eroded. To the left of the chamber is a narrow gap in the rock, through which a straight beam of bright sunlight falls onto the sand in the foreground.
A photography of Tomb IGN18 from the Jabal Banat necropolis of the Hegra archaeological site. The tomb consists of a tall facade with a small door, recessed into the natural rockface. The rockface has horizontal bands of honeycomb pattern (tafoni). There is a tree growing in front of the tomb.
A photograph of the rocky outcrops of Jebel Ithlib, taken from a distance looking over an arid, scrubby plain. The rock formations are wide and have the form of rounded towers huddled together. In the foreground some thorn bushes are visible.
A nighttime scene of the main street of AlUla’s old town. Many tourists can be seen walking along the street, which is lined with stone pavements and lanterns.

Pre-#Islamic history was once taboo within #SaudiArabia. Will the ‘rediscovery’ of an ancient people – the #Nabataeans – encourage international tourism?
