Graphical abstract: Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) provide a standardized framework for monitoring biodiversity change in line with conservation targets. We assessed terrestrial biodiversity datasets for EBVs in Japan and Finland, and compared Japan's data availability with GEO BON and EuropaBON, identifying both unique strengths and gaps. EBVs can inform indicator development, such as the “30 by 30” target, while national products and regional comparisons can enhance coordinated responses to the global biodiversity crisis.
