Lactating brown hyena safely released after capture
A brown hyena captured on a Namibian farm has been collared and released by the Naankuse Foundation’s Rapid Response Unit, marking a success in ongoing efforts to promote human-wildlife coexistence.
This according to a recent post by the foundation following reports from a concerned farmer experiencing livestock losses due to a brown hyena.
Rather than resort to lethal methods, the farmer opted to humanely capture the hyena in a cage trap.
After consulting with Naankuse, he agreed to collar and release the animal to better understand its movements and diet.
“The young hyena was darted and hey presto… it turned out to be a lactating female hyena. Yes, she had cubs in the vicinity,” Naankuse writes.
The hyena received intravenous fluids, multivitamins, and a rabies vaccination, before being fitted with a tracking collar and released back onto the property.
“She and her cubs are roaming the farm, without causing any conflict so far! Another carnivore and farmer living and thriving together on Namibian farmland,” the foundation states.
