Six American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) were in red dirt water with hundreds of Double-crested Cormorants (Nannopterum auritum) at Lake Thunderbird in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on March 29, 2025. Most of the birds are floating facing into the wind and bobbing up and down on the waves. The water is red from Oklahoma red dirt.

A group of cormorants, nearly-black birds with orange patches around the sides and underside of the beak, cluster on an algae-covered rock, with sunlit sea water in the background. One of them is airing out its wings in the sun.

Double-crested cormorants (Nannopterum auritum) hanging out by the beach. I was surprised that they don't have waterproof feathers and must dry them out in the sun; but it helps them dive!
