A platform osprey nest. An adult is standing on the edge of the nest and leaning forward to feed one of the two chicks in the next. The other chick in the nest is watching the feeding.
Let's just continue the osprey theme for #NaturePhotoOfTheDay, because I discovered I have FEEDING PHOTOS from the nest in the previous picture. Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, Galloway Twp NJ, 7/05/14. I don't miss living in NJ but I have great memories of this place and its extraordinary birding.
A platform nest with osprey in it: One adult watching diligently over three chicks, which are mostly feathered in but still kind of floppy and helpless.
Well I am SUPER bad at remembering to do things consistently, but my archive reminded me of photos from years past on this date, and some EXCELLENT nesting osprey shots from Forsythe NWR in Galloway Twp NJ. #NaturePhotoOfTheDay

An osprey sits atop a utility pole against a clear blue sky; not visible in the photo is the fish the osprey had caught and came to the pole to eat. On the right side of the photo, an American crow in flight is pulling on the osprey's tail feathers, hoping to distract the osprey enough to be able to grab some of the osprey's fish.
Trying yet again to get consistent with #NaturePhotoOfTheDay and a memory feature brought this: happy 5-year anniversary to the luckiest bird photo I've ever taken, all the more because it was in my own neighborhood. American crow hassles osprey that was trying to eat, Seattle, WA, 6/1/2020.

Five brant swimming in the ocean. Brant is a smallish goose with black head and neck, a white neck ring, and brown/black/white coloring similar to (but somewhat darker) than Canada goose.
A bunch of different species of gulls swimming over and diving into choppy ocean waters. I am bad at gulls so no IDs.
The paw print of a critter in ocean sand. Can you tell what it is? . . . . . . . . . . . . (It's a river otter. There's one that lives in a marsh at the top of the beach & strolls down to the ocean for snacks. I have posted a photo of this otter arguing with a bald eagle.)
A California sea lion poking its head out of the ocean for a breath. It has very impressive whiskers.
Some #NaturePhotoOfTheDay action again. Here are a few taken at Point No Point in Hansville WA (AMAZING wildlife spot) in April 2021. Ocean views; we have some brant, a bunch of gulls, the footprint of a critter (see if you can guess what it is), & a California sea lion. More details in alt text.
A fairly close shot, from above, of a northern water snake, a colubrid with a small, narrow head and horizontal banding in shades of light and dark brown. This snake is swimming in shallow, fairly clear water; debris and plant life in the water are visible.
Oh goodness, I haven't done a #NaturePhotoOfTheDay in a while and then a memory feature reminded me of photos of this northern water snake! It was so exciting to see this snake and it wasn't fazed by my presence, though it didn't hang around. Cape May Point State Park, NJ, April 21 2012.
An immature bald eagle is sitting on a rock in a low reef in Hood Canal, looking to the left. It's mostly brown, which indicates it's immature, but has some streaks of white showing on its head and back, so probably between one and two years old.
An adult bald eagle sits on the top of a bare tree branch and preens its right wing, which is spread out.
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: Two today--a couple of bald eagles on Hood Canal. An immature bird using the rocks of a low reef for rest/scoping hunting opportunities, and an adult preening.
A yellow-crowned night heron standing on a broken dock post at the edge of a salt marsh. The bird has a long, thick black beak, a head with bold white and black colorblocking, an orange eye, and a body feathered in shades of gray.
I need to get back in the #NaturePhotoOfTheDay habit. Here's a yellow-crowned night heron at dusk. Taken in the salt marsh at Anchorage Point on Great Egg Harbor Bay (across from Ocean City) in New Jersey, June 2011.
Wild forget me not moth: a medium-sized moth with a black body, orange on the face, and wings with intricate patterns of black and white. It is feeding on an aster-like flower.
A Canada jay sits on the end of a conifer branch peering at someone below. It's a small corvid with white body, gray cap and wings, and a fairly small, pointed bill, as well as a lively black eye.
A male sooty grouse crouches under some low trees with a cranky expression. It's a medium chicken-like bird with ashy gray plumage marked with white, a beak like a chicken, a yellow-tan eye, and a bright golden eyebrow that is a field mark for male birds.
A golden-mantled ground squirrel sits in profile at the edge of a gravel walking path by some grasses and flowers, holding some seeds in its paws and either eating them or storing them in cheek pouches. It looks a lot like a chipmunk, but its head is bigger and its tail is longer and fluffier. Most of its fur is golden brown, and there are alternating dark brown and white stripes running vertically down its back.
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay In honor of #WorldWildlifeDay *and* our national parks, and by request of @secondnaturemb.bsky.social, some critters I photographed at Mount Rainier NP, August 2019:

Two killdeer, medium-sized plovers (a type of shorebird) with long legs, straight medium-length bills that are blunt at the tip, and brown and white coloring with two black bands around the neck and upper chest. They are standing in the tracks of a vehicle left on a sandy beach.
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay A couple of killdeer, which is a type of plover. Very common across the U.S. but can be skittish, so this photo was a good "get" for me. Cape May Point State Park, NJ, 2/15/2013.
A hydrangea bush poking through deep snow. One brown bloom is shaped like a heart.
A leftover hydrangea poking out of the snow. A Valentine from nature. #naturephotooftheday
A square suet feeder with two small birds on it: On the left is a small buff-gray bird with mostly uniform coloring; this is a bushtit. On the right at the front is a slightly larger bird with dark gray/black coloring and brilliant yellow on the head, plus white markings on wings and under the tail.
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: I mentioned recently that a Townsend's warbler visited my feeder, but at the time I didn't have a camera handy. A few days ago, though, it visited again, and a camera was handy! The warbler is the yellow and black bird at front. The other bird is a bushtit, common here.
The important part of this photo is a small songbird at a bit of a distance, sitting on a fence in front of a forested area. The bird has a brown back, bright reddish-orange face and breast, and pale, lightly mottled underparts; it has the narrow, straight beak of an insect-eating bird, a dark eye, and a somewhat inquisitive expression. This bird is a European robin.
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay I was EXTREMELY excited to see this little bird while we were on a nature walk in Inverness, Scotland: a European robin! I thought they were migratory & I wouldn't see any in October; but they are not, and we were fortunate to see it & get a couple of quick, not-the-best photos.
These random ‘hot’ spots that appear along one of the trails I hike have always intrigued me. Like, everything around it is frozen but then there’s this little spot of running water and green grass in the middle of the woods. #naturephotooftheday

A male Anna's hummingbird sitting on a branch with snow in the background. He is flaring the feathers on his head and neck (gorget), and the feathers are glowing in a bright, deep metallic magenta shade.
#NaturePhotoOfTheDay: In honor of our current snowy weather, a male Anna's hummingbird flaring his gorgeous magenta head and neck feathers on a snowy day in February 2018. Taken in our yard.
Fun fact: The color of these feathers is refractive! You'll only see it in certain light at certain angles.
An immature bald eagle is standing on a moss-and-lichen covered tree branch, facing the camera but with its head tilted in a way that appears winsome. We can tell this bird is immature because it's mostly brown, lacking the classic white head and tail of the American bald eagle, but it does have patches of white showing on its body and tail.
I said I was going to restart this and immediately failed, though it was partly because I wrecked my laptop and didn't have easy access to my photos. Let's try again. #NaturePhotoOfTheDay: an immature bald eagle at Billy Frank Jr Nisqually NWR, taken on this date in 2019.
Downed tree in snowy woods with heart shaped design on the bark.
I almost forgot to post today. I’ve walked by this downed tree countless times but on this day I spotted the heart. Do you see it? #naturephotooftheday
