Mountain bikers face off in high-stakes XCO battle Erasmus Shalihaxwe The 2025 Nedbank Namibian Mountain Bike XCC, XCO, and Cross-Country Championships will take place this weekend at Towerbos Trails. The event, hosted by the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF) and sponsored by Nedbank Namibia, will feature the Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) race on Saturday.  On Sunday, cyclists will compete in the Cross-Country Short Track (XCC) and Electric Cross-Country (E-XC) events. Nedbank Namibia Communication Manager Selma Kaulinge said the event will showcase Namibia’s cycling talent, from seasoned professionals to future stars.  She said the national championships form a key part of the cycling calendar and provide opportunities for local cyclists to gain Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) points. “These national races serve as platforms for Namibian cyclists to accumulate crucial Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) points, which are essential for global rankings and, ultimately, for qualifying for international events such as the Olympic Games,” she said. The races are open to riders of all age and skill categories. Saturday’s action will start at 09h00 with the Nipper Under-10 and Sprog categories, followed by youth and veteran races at 10h00.  The elite men, women, and under-23 categories will begin at 11h00. Kaulinge said the event is an important stepping stone for cyclists with international ambitions.  She pointed to riders like Alex Miller, who rose through national XCC and XCO events to represent Namibia at the Olympics. Others who have come through the same route include Tristan de Lange and Vera Looser. “Beyond Olympic qualification, the Nedbank Namibian Mountain Bike Championships are integral to the Namibian cycling ecosystem. They provide a crucial training ground and venue for the world-famous Nedbank Desert Dash,” she said. “As money experts at Nedbank Namibia, we believe in doing good in the communities in which we operate. Our continued sponsorship of these races and the broader cycling series reflects this philosophy. These races are more than just sporting events; they are investments into our national sports development, as they provide a platform for our athletes to thrive and enable them to compete on an international level. Namibia Cycling Federation president Tauko Shilongo said the federation is committed to delivering a high-quality event. “The NCF is deeply involved in ensuring the highest quality of races, from sanctioning and technical oversight to promoting fair play and rider safety. Our role is to provide a structured and supportive environment that allows our cyclists to perform at their peak. We are working closely with our stakeholders and sponsors, Nedbank Namibia, to ensure this event meets international standards,” said Shilongo.

Desert Dash gifts Ovitoto kids with bicycles from proceeds Erasmus Shalihaxwe Nedbank Namibia has donated 40 bicycles to Beautiful Kidz, a non-profit organisation that supports vulnerable children and their families in Windhoek and Ovitoto. The bicycles, valued at N$40,000, were bought with funds raised during the 2024 Nedbank Desert Dash.  Participants and supporters pledged the amount during the event to support Beautiful Kidz. Nedbank Namibia communication manager Selma Kaulinge said the organisation operates from community centres in Windhoek and Ovitoto.  “They serve hundreds of children with pre-primary education, tutoring, youth clubs, and holiday camps, and offer outreach and parenting support,” she said. Kaulinge said that the organisation also empowers women through needlework training. “With a Christian foundation, Beautiful Kidz brings hope and opportunity to some of Namibia’s most disadvantaged communities,” she said. She said the Desert Dash helped raise both funds and awareness.  “Through participation in the 2024 event, the organisation raised N$40,000, which was used to purchase and distribute 40 bicycles to the Ovitoto centre.” Nedbank Namibia Okahandja branch manager Desire Suze-Salomo attended the handover.  “The Nedbank Desert Dash is more than just a race, it’s a powerful platform for charities to raise both awareness and funds,” she said. “By participating in this event, organisations like Beautiful Kidz can connect with new supporters and potential sponsors, making a tangible impact in their communities. At Nedbank, we believe in being money experts who do good, and this ethos drives our commitment to supporting initiatives that uplift and empower those we serve,” Suze-Salomo added. Nedbank Namibia chief commercial officer JG van Graan said the Desert Dash is a key community event.  “It not only challenges participants physically but also unites them for a greater cause,” he said. The funds and awareness raised through this event have a lasting impact on the communities we serve, as seen with Beautiful Kidz.  “The Nedbank Desert Dash platform has become increasingly influential in its significance for fundraising potential, and we have no doubt that the 2025 edition will again amplify the sheer momentum that we have seen in recent years,” said van Graan. Beautiful Kidz board chairman Andrew Nicholson thanked Nedbank.  “Nedbank has given hope to the kids who received bicycles to also dream of competing in the Nedbank Desert Dash in the future,” he said. “This event has brought our community closer together, rallying around our riders and deepening engagement with our generous donors. Through this support, we’ve been able to provide bicycles to the children who will no doubt ride thousands of kilometres, perhaps even preparing for the Nedbank Desert Dash 2040 when they come of age,” Nicholson said.

Nedbank Namibia invests N$560,000 in agricultural education Staff Writer  Nedbank Namibia has pledged N$560,000 to sponsor students at the Agra Agricultural Academy in 2025.  The funding will cover registration and tuition fees for national certificate and diploma students, making education more affordable for aspiring agricultural professionals. The Agra Agricultural Academy is managed by Agra ProVision, a subsidiary of Agra Limited. It offers training in plant production, animal production, advanced farm management, agricultural extension, and agri-sales and services.  The academy provides accredited online courses through the South African Qualification Authority and is affiliated with the International Agricultural Academy for Africa. At the sponsorship handover, Nedbank Namibia Managing Director Martha Murorua emphasised the bank’s strategic focus on agriculture.  “The agricultural sector has been a key pillar in our strategic plan and will continue to be so. This investment reflects our commitment to a stronger future for Namibia’s agriculture,” she said. Murorua explained that the bursaries aim to encourage young people to pursue agriculture qualifications.  “Practical degrees equip students with hands-on skills to address modern agricultural challenges and contribute to sector growth. Our investments in education, including the N$800,000 Nedbank Bursary program and our Education Trust, are vital for building a skilled workforce that supports economic growth, food security, and sustainable jobs in Namibia.” Agra Limited CEO Arnold Klein highlighted the company’s strong local presence, noting that since Agra ProVision’s inception, it has had over 3,800 shareholders, 75% of whom are active Namibian farmers. “We take pride in being taxpayers who support Namibia’s economy. Since 2017, we have paid out N$61 million in dividends, and this year, we expect profits after tax to grow by 45% to 55%,” he said. Nedbank Namibia and Agra Limited have partnered with the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) to provide students with practical on-the-job training at NAB-supported agricultural institutes after graduation. A memorandum of understanding is being finalised to define roles and responsibilities. NAB CEO Fidelis Mwazi stressed the importance of specialised training and adaptation to climate change.  “Our graduate training programme supports disciplines like agronomy, plant health, and soil management at the postgraduate level. We place graduates with strategic farming operations to gain practical experience and develop into consultants and mentors,” he said.  Mwazi added that irrigated agriculture is now essential due to climate change, and NAB is working with financial institutions to develop financing for the crop value chain to help farmers adopt resilient and productive systems. Nedbank Namibia also supports agriculture through initiatives such as the Nedbank for Agriculture Series, a 10-event nationwide golf tournament that raised N$250,000 for Agra ProVision in 2024, funding training for underprivileged farmers. Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform, Inge Zaamwani, underlined the government’s focus on food sufficiency and the agricultural sector’s role in socio-economic development while delivering the keynote on behalf of Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare.  “Agriculture contributes to job creation, poverty eradication, food self-reliance, and GDP growth. It is a priority area in Vision 2030 and our National Development Plans,” she said.

Nedbank Namibia launches education trust to fund employees’ and dependents’ studies across SADC NedbankNamibia has launched the NedNamibia Holdings Education Trust to provide financial assistance for employees and their dependents pursuing higher education in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The initiative, which was launched on Monday, will support the education of 23 beneficiaries this year. The trust will be managing shares and investments to generate income which will be used to provide financial assistance to qualifying employees and their dependents. The funding will be available for any field of study at accredited institutions across the SADC region. NNH Group Remco chairperson Florentia Amuenje highlighted the hope that the initiative will empower individuals and communities. “For us at Nedbank, this initiative is more than just a way to strengthen our human resources strategy and retain employees. It is to capitalise on the profound transformational power of education and to create a lasting impact for the beneficiaries,” she said. Amuenje said there is an urgent need to make higher education accessible in Namibia. She said the enrolment in such institutions stands at just 28.89%, significantly lower than the global average of 40%. Meanwhile, individuals with higher education are 24% more likely to secure employment. “This is where the NNH Education Trust comes in. The founders recognised this need and established the trust to offer financial assistance to our staff and their dependents who wish to pursue tertiary qualifications,” she said. This year’s beneficiaries come from around the country and will be able to pursue their studies in a variety of fields from microbiology to cybersecurity and banking finance. “We firmly believe investing in our employees not only fosters individual growth, but also drives organisational success,” Bianca Muller, Nedbank Namibia’s human resources executive said at the launch event.
