XVIII handwritten document in Spanish: Siete Paizes de China de mas de vara con marcos pintados de encarnado en siete pesos.
#SOSPalaeogeography #EarlyModern #NewSpain
I read Siete Paizes de China which were framed. A couple more objects like this are mentioned in the inventory. Does anybody know what it might refer to? A type of painting? Was it a common motif?
Handwritten text in Spanish: [illegible] de Torres a martines contra FreiJó en quatro rr Lorenzo Graciasn tomo V otro de ensalla en seis rr
#SOSPalaeography. I suspect the highlighted part is the title of a book/booklet but cannot make the first word. Also, if someone knows more about which Torres, Martinez, and Freijó it could refer to. Guy was Spanish but died in New Spain, 1787. #EarlyModern #NewSpain #Spain #BookHistory
Part of a handwritten document in Spanish (18th century), highlighted: Yttem: cien pesos de la limosna de cien pobres del Hospicio que acompañaron al cadaver á S. Francisco
The executors of this rich woman paid 100 pesos to 100 poor people to walk behind the coffin. I've also seen a will where besides the 1 peso per person, they had to be given specific clothes to wear. Gonna start collecting coins for my funeral! #EarlyModern #NewSpain

A printed receipt with some hand written text. 18th century, New Spain. The text says: Porteria del Convento de N.P.S Francisco de México y 9 del mes de Febrero de 1787 años. Mortaja bendita que lleva Dn Jose de la Riva. 12 ps. 4. rs Signed by Fr Josef Esquivel Port
Cover page of the Flos Sanctorum by Villegas,m copy of 1591.
What could you do with 12 pesos in the 1780s in #NewSpain? Get 4 second-hand volumes of Villega's #FlosSanctorum (Spanish version of #GoldenLegend). If you added 4 reales you could get a blessed shroud. Ofc, if you were dead you couldn't read so the shroud was a better investment. #BookHistory
A dog with headphones speaking on a microphone. There is a bright pink text which says: i kNowS about reading literacy censorship the Inquisition
The hosts of CodEX Machina invited me to talk about my crazy research. Curious about reading in New Spain? Literacy? Censorship? The Inquisition? I got you covered (also available in Apple and Pocket Casts). #BookHistory #NewSpain #Reading

A text in two columns, on the right the main text with some number sin parenthesis. On the left, the same number sin parenthesis and under them the reference.
Referencing is part & parcel of scholarship: through footnotes, hyperlinks, or with side notes. Example of the latter in a 1710 text by Isidoro Gil de Jaz on the fracas between the Colegio Mayor de Todos los Santos & the Real Universidad in Mexico City, #NewSpain. #BookHistory #HistoriaDelLibro
A pronóstico from 1702. These little octavo booklets were cheaply produced almanacs with special heavenly events (like eclipses), a list of the feasts and celebrations per month, as well as favourable days for healing practices, navigation, and other activities. #BookHistory #NewSpain

I just showed my partner the shipping list from this academic from 1764: 22 cajones (boxes) de libros transported from Spain to #NewSpain. Thus me checking an extra luggage filled with (mostly academic) books is nothing, nothing compared to this. #BookHistory

Finished checking 148 licenses to read forbidden books and made a preselection of 25 to use in my chapter 💪 Some are for only one book (in 12 volumes!) which seems to have been very popular. #BookHistory #NewSpain
The no guy yes guy meme with a puffed jacket. On the no square there is the logo for DJ Pedro Suave, a professional DJ and sound hire. On the yes square there is part of a XVII book written by Petrus Suavis Polanus
In #NewSpain, ppl could not read books listed in the Index. *However* some could get a license to read forbidden 📚. Most licenses contained an exclusion of works which could not be read, such as those by Pedro Suave. He was not a XVII DJ but the pseudonym of Paolo Sarpi. #BookHistory #Censorship

#EarlyModern "per my last mail": a notary reminds the inquisitors he already sent the paper they asked for and that they will find it in the mail he sent. #NewSpain
Part fo a handwritten document: pasara perjuicio de Berbo adberbum dole leido, y haviendo
During the colony, lettered people from Spain would bitch about how scribes in New Spain wrote. I don't know if the scribes in Spain also wrote like this but the creative spelling I find 😬. This is from 1777: berbo adberbum. No pos si. #NewSpain
Juan Antonio Perez de Espinosa was a Franciscan from #NewSpain who founded an oratory in Mexico and one in Spain. He lead a life of asceticism: waking up at 2 AM, wearing coarse clothes, self flagellation, sometimes slept in a coffin, & wore green glasses to see the world in darkness.
CHILD MARTYRS releases on April 8, but you can preorder a copy today, or ask your local indie bookstore to stock it!

Today's 🐇hole: 1794 Inquisition file. It should have been a simple case but someone reopened it 6 years later involving a calificador who was also a marquis. Yadayada, several dossiers later: marquis received books from an expelled #Jesuit who seems to have been his relative. #NewSpain #BookHistory
Don Vicente Vidal, executor of monsieur La Roche, burned in 1974 the books left by La Roche when he found out one was a forbidden book: Lettres écrites de la montagne by Rousseau. #NewSpain #BookHistory
I found a name and thought: a clue! Turns out "Ruy Velázquez" is a character from Cantar de los Siete Infantes de Lara ("Song of the Seven Lara Princes"). It is still an interesting finding tho, the song was clearly popular up to at least the XVIII in #NewSpain. #EarlyModern
So, if we are here, why not extend the intelectual perspective, and dare call this wonderful #continent #US #USA : The #NewSpain ?

Re: discussion about #reading vs listening to someone reading aloud. In my research - #EarlyModern #NewSpain - I claim they were different & they mark a difference in access which is affected by a person's context. Cause otherwise "everybody read." But that is different from audiobooks. #BookHistory
My dude is dead (unsurprising as he was born in 1754). His heirs found #ForbiddenBooks in his library but file doesn't state if dying was related to that. AFAIK he was only severely reprimanded. Cannot find his travelling record to #NewSpain nor death record (tried FamilySearch) 🫠. What happened?
Handwritten text in Spanish: En 12 de henero de 79 recorde al P Blanco la remision antecedente de los Libros que se expresan para su calificacion
It's hilarious how 18th New Spanish Inquisition reminds me of academia. (I'll skip anything about university managers).
Padre Blanco is asked in 1778 to review the book Examen des critiques du livre intitulé De l'Esprit by Leroy, it is 1779 and he has not sent it. #PeerReview #BookHistory #NewSpain
