The #BiafraWar, aka #NigerianCivilWar, was fought with little regard for civilians, with Nigerian leadership using (& defending) starvation as a tool of war; two million died. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1969, PM #HaroldWilson lied about the scale of British arms exports to #Nigeria.
One million #Igbo people fled northern #Nigeria in 1966, and up to 30,000 were murdered in #pogroms, so the southeast rebelled and sought independence as the Republic of #Biafra. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1970, an almost three-year-long #NigerianCivilWar ended in Biafran surrender.
The #NigerianCivilWar/#BiafraWar was fought from 1967-1970. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1969, Nigerian troops captured #Umuahia, capital of #RepublicOfBiafra. Since the war's end, #Igbo nationalism has only grown, but as #Biafra holds most of #Nigeria's oil, independence is unlikely.
