Nymphaea ‘Pamela’ is a Tropical Day-Blooming waterlily. Tropical waterlilies tend to be larger and more fragrant than their Hardy cousins, and they tend to bear their flowers well above the surface of the water (Hardy waterlilies usually sit right on the surface). #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Euryale ferox has fantastic foliage—young leaves are all puckered and prickly. You can see why Victoria amazonica (which also has prickly leaves) was first classified as a species of Euryale. Both photos by wondoroo CCBYNCSA2 #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Barclaya has 8 spp distributed across SE Asia and Malesia. The flowers aren’t as showy as those of their waterlily cousins. This is B. cf. motleyi from Malaysia. The fruits are capsules that open to release buoyant, white flesh with embedded seeds. Water dispersal. #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Nuphar is a genus of 15 spp & natural hybrids distributed across the northern hemisphere. Nuphar advena is common in eastern N. America. The flowers are protogynous & require pollination (by flies, bees & beetles) to set seed. #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Victoria cruziana, pictured, is also cultivated. It tends to have less colorful leaves with a slight outward curl to the upper rim. The hybrid (V. cruziana x V. amazonica), first made at Longwood Gardens in 1960, is even more popular, as it has hybrid vigor. #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Victoria spp are waterlilies like no other. For years, 2 spp were known, but in 2022, Lucy T Smith et al. described a third species, V. boliviana. The amazing Victoria spp are popular in cultivation. 📷: V. amazonica cultivated in Thailand. #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Nymphaea (65 spp) has a worldwide distribution. Hybridizers have developed lots of cultivars, so flowers come in just about every color. Growers recognize 3 groups: Hardy, Tropical Day-Blooming & Tropical Night-Blooming. This is ‘Wanvisa,’ a popular Hardy cultivar. #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Nymphaeaceae comprise 5 genera of aquatic plants, typified by Nymphaea, the waterlily. It’s part of an early-diverging branch of the Angiosperms with distinctive anatomy & morphology. The flowers have many parts, in spirals (not whorls). 📷: Nymphaea odorata. #Nymphaeaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

This photograph, titled "Slumber of the Lotus Nymph," captures a single, partially opened water lily, or lotus flower, emerging from the water. The image is taken from a slightly elevated, close-up perspective, focusing on the flower's center. The flower itself is a beautiful contrast of white and green. Its outer layer consists of several closed, large sepals, which are a vibrant, textured green. These sepals have a slightly elongated, pointed shape and are the most prominent feature in the foreground. They are covered in tiny specks, possibly pollen or natural imperfections, visible upon close inspection. Inside this green protective layer, the delicate white petals are beginning to unfurl. They are tightly clustered at the flower's center, creating a sense of a bud just on the verge of blooming. The petals have a soft, almost translucent appearance and are tinged with a faint yellowish glow from the sunlight. The flower is resting on a large, flat, green leaf, which is a key part of its aquatic environment. This leaf has a slightly waxy texture, and the surface appears to be dappled with tiny droplets of water. The leaf itself is partially submerged in the water. The background of the image is a blurred expanse of water, reflecting a mix of deep blues, lighter aquas, and hints of green and yellow. This soft, shimmering background serves to highlight the sharp focus and detail of the water lily in the foreground. Scientifically, this image depicts a member of the Nymphaeaceae family, commonly known as a water lily. The sepals are the outermost part of the flower and are typically green, functioning to protect the developing bud before it opens. The white petals are the showy, fertile part of the flower, which, once fully opened, will attract pollinators. The broad, floating leaves are characteristic of these aquatic plants, allowing them to capture sunlight for photosynthesis. The water in the background is the plant's natural habitat, and the photograph beautiful…

The broad, floating leaves of water lilies. They are round with a flat shape There is a single bright yellow flower here floating almost in the middle while a bed of underwater grasses/moss whatever can be see the clarity of the water from middle to bottom while the top reflects the thin dark branches of a tree trunk. Extra info: The Aesthetic and Ecological Benefits of Lily Pads: They provide shade for fish, reducing water temperature and reducing algae growth. The roots of lily pads help stabilize the pond's bottom. Water lily's flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to the surrounding ecosystem's health. What are the disadvantages of water lilies? With excessive growth, water lilies can substantially lower the oxygen levels in the water. By spreading over the surface of a pond or marshy area, water lilies gain the advantage of sunlight for photosynthesis but they can crowd out other plant species.
