#OCDAwarenessWeek
OCD Awareness Week Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition where a person has obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. • An obsession is an unwanted and unpleasant thought, image or urge that repeatedly enters your mind, causing feelings of anxiety, disgust or unease. • A compulsion is a repetitive behaviour or mental act that you feel you need to do to temporarily relieve the unpleasant feelings brought on by the obsessive thought. For example, a doctor with OCD may have an obsessive fear that they have prescribed the wrong dosage of medicine to a patient. As a result, they may feel the need to check the prescription an excessive amount of times, even after they have confirmed that the dosage is correct. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, nhs.uk.
If you are exhibiting and struggling with the symptoms of OCD, you are not alone. If you are unable to access confidential mental health treatment from local services, NHS Practitioner Health may be right for you. #OCDAwarenessWeek
How can Talking Therapies help someone with symptoms of OCD?
A green background has the words Treatment for OCD is usually a type of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in front of it. To the right is a cartoon image of a man looking worried and stressed. Below this, it says This involves: Working with your therapist to break down your problems into their separate parts, such as your thoughts, physical feelings and actions. Encouraging you to face your fears and have obsessive thoughts without neutralising them with compulsive behaviours; you start with situations that cause the least anxiety first, before moving on to more difficult thoughts.
A green background has information about ocd symptoms on it. to the right is a cartoon image of two people talking. The text says If you’re struggling with OCD symptoms: obsessions – unwanted, intrusive and often distressing thoughts, images or urges repeatedly entering your mind emotions – the obsession causes a feeling of intense anxiety or distress compulsions – repetitive behaviours or mental acts that a person with OCD feels driven to perform as a result of the anxiety and distress caused by the obsession RDaSH Talking Therapies can help you.

A green background has a dark blue design on top which includes lines on the top left and bottom right corners, a talking therapies speech bubble to the bottom left and stars to the top right. In the centre, a quote says I have OCD - untreated and undiagnosed for more than 40 years. This lead to severe anxiety and depression. I cannot speak highly enough of Talking Therapies at RDaSH, they were brilliant and I don't think I would be here now without them. Everyone is brilliant and so empathetic. I had 20 hours of CBT with a therapist who got my depression score from 90% down to about 10%.I now feel confident in handling my OCD and know I'm in control of it. Now, I'm a volunteer for Talking Therapies and want to tell as many people as I can that help is out there. Go to Talking Therapies - they saved my life. They can help you too, they really can!
✨ It was only right that we showcased this incredible story on Feedback Friday for #OCDAwarenessWeek!

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than a need to keep things organized; it is an intrusion of unwanted thoughts and fixation on performing actions to reduce anxiety caused by those thoughts.

At left a journal with a smile on it. Text says how it started, the experiences that inspired the book. At right the book I think I think a lot and the text "how it's going." The author, a woman, site behind both.
I THINK I THINK A LOT bears the message that sometimes on the underside of something bad there is something good.
This photo proves that idea on the meta level...

Graphic that has this quote: "I think i think a lot is a powerful story of empathy, compassion, and acceptance. Whipple writes beautifully of OCD from a child's perspective and invites the reader into the intricacies of this world. I love this book so much because Whipple makes us think a lot, too, and we're so much better because of it. - Jordan Scott, poet and author of I talk like a river.
It's #OCDAwarenessWeek so I'll share poet and author Jordan Scott's very kind blurb about I THINK I THINK A LOT. It's inspired by my own #OCD.

This #OCDAwarenessWeek I wanted to recommend to you all a book written by a man who saved my life - and he has no idea he did.
In 2017, former NHL goalie Corey Hirsch wrote an article for @playerstribune.bsky.social about his near death encounter with OCD. Just over a year later, I read it. 1/?

I've heard that reducing #OxidativeStress helps some people with their OCD, so anti-oxidant supplements, anti-inflammatory diet, that kind of thing.
But I guess you probably know this already, apologies if you get lots of these kind of suggestions.

Some OCD Awareness Week reminders:
- OCD isn’t just wanting perfection & cleanliness
- OCDers can’t just “get over it”
- OCD is not an adjective for non-OCDers to use
- OCD can impact many areas of one’s life

#ocdawarenessweek happens in October so I'll be sharing a little here about my own experience having #OCD. I got to speak publicly at The Row House Forum in Lancaster, PA a few years ago about mental illness, fear, and hope. The full audio is in the next post.

As someone who's been coping with ocd for 9 years, I wanted to get out of my chest and make this as a way to show awareness for #OCDAwarenessWeek, remember that your mental health matters and shouldn't blame yourself for it... which is one of those things I should keep in mind!
