Two octopuses fall into each others arms in the bright light of a new day and a new world. As they draw near one another, their skin colors and patterns interweave with one another. The sun watches over their union in a coral bed filled with the crackle and burst of spawning polyps. Staved into the sandy bed are two shell-tipped spears. A woven net lies draped from them onto the ground, the far hooked end of which is held in the arm of the female octopus. By SS Julian for Octopolis

The Quidnunc looms imperiously over two deferential suppliants. The 64 arms of the eight pontifices interweave, forming a nonverbal network as they dispense their collective dogma upon their domain. Patterns ripple across this ring of interlocked sucker and muscle, nearly impossible to distinguish one individual from anther. One of their number, distinguished by the crown of thorns seastar clasping its mantle, extends an arm wielding an ornate staff carved into a hook. The Empress reclines within her throne of fan coral and a corallimorph cushion. To one side she grasps a staghorn coral staff, and on the other a sand dollar shield. Within her web rest many developing eggs. Around her is wrapped a domesticated moray eel. All along her mantle crawl commensal crustaceans and molluscs.
