A color postcard titled “Night Scene at Municipal Airport, Cleveland, Ohio” depicts an illuminated airport terminal at night, rendered in a slightly painterly style typical of mid-20th-century postcards. The scene is dominated by a low, Art Deco–influenced terminal building with clean, geometric lines and a central control tower rising above the structure. The tower is capped with a glassed-in observation room glowing warmly from within, crowned by a bright beacon light that radiates outward into the dark blue night sky.

Multiple floodlights mounted around the building cast halos of yellow-white light, creating a dramatic contrast against the nighttime background. The terminal façade includes rectangular windows lit from inside, & signage reading “Cleveland Airport” is visible on the building, identifying the location as the city’s airport.

In the foreground, a small single-engine, high-wing monoplane is parked on the tarmac. The aircraft is painted primarily black with a bold red wing & red accent striping along the fuselage. Its landing gear is fixed, with large rounded wheel fairings, & the propeller is stationary. The cockpit windows reflect the surrounding lights, & the plane is positioned at a slight angle, facing toward the right side of the image.

A low fence separates the aircraft area from the terminal grounds, where small shrubs and landscaping elements are faintly visible. The ground surface appears smooth & reflective, catching the glow of the overhead lights.

The oldest portion was built in 1811 by Arora Buttles. In 1816 Orange Johnson, a hornsmith, bought the property adding the Federal-style wing.

In the 19th century, Ohio had no safety laws for railroad bridges. In 1879, a bridge over the Big Walnut Creek near Sunbury collapsed as a Cleveland, Mt. Vernon & Columbus RR freight train crossed. The bridge’s replacement failed in 1912. www.markstrecker.com/13.html#13 #RailroadHistory #OhioHistory
