The back of the post card, with the penciled inscription "Dick on Mohawk river at Schenetady [sic] in 1917 while working in G.E." The right side of the postcard is divided, placing it after 1907, and the stamp box is surrounded by "AZO," the Kodak brand of photographic paper used, and four triangles in the corners which were used in 1904-1918, according to one source. Happily, the captioner dated this for us anyway.

A young white woman with light, straight hair to her shoulders, wearing a shirt with inch-wide horizontal stripes, is eating a light-colored ice cream cone while looking to her left side. There is a beadboard wainscoating wall behind her, laid horizontally, and in the direction she is looking that is a hand pressed against the wall, just in frame, giving the composition a weirdly ominous tone.

Took this picture in 1977, and it fascinates me to this day. It just has that certain something, entirely by accident.

Small windows are seen on either side of a crooked screen door; in the upper story, just below the roofline, are even smaller windows. A clothesline runs from one of the lower windows, with various dishcloths and other rags hanging on it from wooden clothespins. Some small potted flowers sit on a bench beneath the clothesline. In the foreground there is an iron hand-pump on a wooden deck over a well. The pump spout is covered with a rag meant to strain out rust. A galvanized watering can and two plastic buckets, one yellow and one green, sit on the well deck.

In the foreground are two boys at a round table, one seated, in glasses and a button-down shirt, looking at another boy, standing in a t-shirt with striped collar and sleeves, his hands spread wide as he has just let go of a tower of balanced little milk cartons. 10 of them are stacked, one on top of the other, which was challenging because they were never perfectly flat, always a little bit of curvature to the sides that made them hard to simply stack up. Other cartons are lying on the table, along with books and a purse. A table of other students paying no attention to this is in the background.

From my #highschool cafeteria in 1977: a friend of mine successfully stacks 10 waxed milk cartons on top of each other – a challenge, as the sides were never perfectly flat. This was one of many ways we killed time at lunch. #OldPhotographs #BWPhoto #filmPhotography #OldPhotos
