A photograph of a man wearing a large cap, what appears to be a mid-weight, mid-length jacket and trousers, standing on a vast field of broken ice on a frozen river. The low shoreline is in the far distance.

The back of the post card, with the penciled inscription "Dick on Mohawk river at Schenetady [sic] in 1917 while working in G.E." The right side of the postcard is divided, placing it after 1907, and the stamp box is surrounded by "AZO," the Kodak brand of photographic paper used, and four triangles in the corners which were used in 1904-1918, according to one source. Happily, the captioner dated this for us anyway.

This is an old #rppc #postcard that I bought at a shop in #Schenectady a couple of years back. Fascinated with it but never sure just what to do with it. It's a real photo postcard showing "Dick on Mohawk River at Schenectady in 1917 while working in G.E." […]

Picture of a newsstand vendor in a winter cap with ear flaps up, horn-rimmed glasses, a winter coat and an apron with a faded "Newsweek" logo, looking at the camera and holding up a copy of a newspaper, the Syracuse Herald-Journal (afternoon paper). Behind him is Syracuse's main downtown street.

When I took this – or even ten years ago, for that matter – I could not have imagined that city newsstands would almost completely disappear someday. This is from November 1979, in downtown #SyracuseNY. His name was Pete Mussi, and he was a fixture there for […]

A young woman sits on a set of interior stairs, next to a railing, reading an open newspaper. She is seen from above, and is wearing a plaid shirt and light colored pants with sneakers. She has a newspaper spread open across her lap, a section of it lying on the stairway landing behind her. A camera in its case lies at her side. There are no other people in the picture.

Here's another #OldPhoto I took in 1977, one of the earliest photographs I ever took. Love the tone, the composition, the feel of a relaxing moment just reading the newspaper in a public place, waiting for the day to begin. This is in #SyracuseUniversity's I […]

A young white woman with light, straight hair to her shoulders, wearing a shirt with inch-wide horizontal stripes, is eating a light-colored ice cream cone while looking to her left side. There is a beadboard wainscoating wall behind her, laid horizontally, and in the direction she is looking that is a hand pressed against the wall, just in frame, giving the composition a weirdly ominous tone.

Took this picture in 1977, and it fascinates me to this day. It just has that certain something, entirely by accident.

A color photograph of a very old clapboard-covered house. The clapboard is weathered and unpainted. Small windows are seen on either side of a crooked screen door; in the upper story, just below the roofline, are even smaller windows. A clothesline runs from one of the lower windows, with various dishcloths and other rags hanging on it from wooden clothespins. Some small potted flowers sit on a bench beneath the clothesline. In the foreground there is an iron hand-pump on a wooden deck over a well. The pump spout is covered with a rag meant to strain out rust. A galvanized watering can and two plastic buckets, one yellow and one green, sit on the well deck.

My great great aunt's house in West Glenville, NY, where I spent many summer days in the 1960s and '70s. While it had electricity, it did not have indoor plumbing. We had to draw water from the pump in this picture – drawn through shale, it was quite tasty […]

Hmm how to write alt text without giving away too many clues. It's a black and white photograph of a beautiful bride in a full length gown with long sleeves, slightly puffy shoulders and a high neckline. She's wearing a veil and carrying a large bunch of gladioli and dahlias

A woman in a pantsuit crosses a downtown street under an umbrella. In the background, another group of pedestrians crosses in front of stopped cars in a parallel crosswalk. The background is a typical run-down 1970s downtown, with a Proctor's theater marquee on the left (showing "The Other Side of Midnight" and "Race for Your Life Charlie Brown"), a large local department store (The Carl Company), and various other small businesses in a smattering of non-unified buildings. it is raining lightly and everything looks wet and gray.

Downtown #Schenectady NY, probably autumn 1977. A dreary day in what was then a dreary place, even though I loved it. The Proctor's Theatre on the left has survived and expanded, the old local department store hung on into the early '90s, everything else has […]

#FamilyHistory #OldPhotographs Based on the hemline and oodles of lace, my guess is early 1920s. An elaborate dress and bouquet so I'm thinking definitely post-WWI.

A young woman, a high schooler, with short somewhat wavy brown hair is wearing a clown outfit, white with red dots all over it, and her head is surrounded by colorful latex balloons attached to her collar; more balloons are pinned to her costume. She is smiling and looking sideways, standing patiently as unseen hands attach balloons to her costume.

1977: High school pep rally attendance was mandatory. A pep rally was also the place you'd be least likely to find me – school spirit has never been my thing – but I did take some pictures, apparently, in rare color. This is our senior class president for […]

You know those moments, when you talk with your 80 year old relative, and all of a sudden he says: "I've never shown you the photos..." and then, magic unfolds.

Black and white photograph of a high school cafeteria. In the foreground are two boys at a round table, one seated, in glasses and a button-down shirt, looking at another boy, standing in a t-shirt with striped collar and sleeves, his hands spread wide as he has just let go of a tower of balanced little milk cartons. 10 of them are stacked, one on top of the other, which was challenging because they were never perfectly flat, always a little bit of curvature to the sides that made them hard to simply stack up. Other cartons are lying on the table, along with books and a purse. A table of other students paying no attention to this is in the background.

From my #highschool cafeteria in 1977: a friend of mine successfully stacks 10 waxed milk cartons on top of each other – a challenge, as the sides were never perfectly flat. This was one of many ways we killed time at lunch. #OldPhotographs #BWPhoto #filmPhotography #OldPhotos
