Gonna tell my children this was the #omelas child
Exactly the opposite in fact. I’m far too empathetic with the plight of the most vulnerable in the world, and refuse to buy my own comfort with their suffering.
But you be you. #Omelas

Finally got round to reading Le Guin's "those who walk away from Omelas". I never realised it was a short story - completed it in 5 mins. Wish I'd. Known sooner.

Huh this post doesn’t seem to have made it to the feed. Maybe I need to add #earthseed or #omelas 🌰
Would you have walked away from #Omelas? Or are you still fighting to preserve it as it crumbles? #leguin #visa #mastercard #purityculture #censorship
You know who the real monster is.

I almost wish we'd read the 2 #Omelas responses in reverse, with Jemisin's first. It hews more closely to the style of LeGuin's.
Here are some other essays in response if you are interested in further reading:
I think this third #Omelas story (The Ones Who Stay and Fight) is the most seductive dystopia yet! It really brings you in, and ends with this stirring rallying cry that makes you want to stay and fight too, but they're talking about killing a man for having forbidden knowledge and wrong thoughts.🌰
Ok, now I have to praise how Kim uses the various "they" pronouns in her #Omelas response! So effective.
We'll find out on Aug 16 whether "Why Don't We Just Kill the Kid In the #Omelas Hole" wins the Hugo for Best SS, just as LeGuin did. It's already won a Nebula, a Locus, and several others.
After reading, I definitely felt it deserved them!
It doesn’t spare the Accelerationists either. Revolutionary groups don’t typically exhibit nuanced thinking historically, do they? They have principles, but real human flaws. And single mindedness. There will be blood. #omelas 🌰
This is such an achingly on point take on the way things play out in the world in terms of Nice Houses justifying the cost of their comfort. We see it now, in our lives, every single day. Omigod the soundproofing. And no real concern until it might be their child one day. #omelas 🌰
ok this story had a great voice, I loved it. "The load-bearing suffering child" is a great phrase. But it bugs me that none of these accelorationists think 'maybe instead of killing the kid, we save him and take him away from #Omelas'. Is there a reason saving the kid would be less effective? 🌰
#Omelas won the 1974 Hugo Award for Best Short Story (beating out George RR Martin 😂) which is one of the most prestigious awards in SFF.
But as a SFF reader it always irks me how sometimes (often?) such amazing genre writing gets dismissed by the greater literary community.
I wasn't expecting #Omelas to remind me so much of The Giver, which was a formative book of my 90s youth. The ending especially, seeing Jonas as one of the ones who "walks away," into an unknown, having discovered his utopia is actually a dystopia.
This is a 1972 version of utopia, all sex, drugs and rock n roll, um, flute music, but the build your own utopia aspect of it (add an orgy if you want, drugs not for you, have a beer, etc) really makes the reader feel complicit in the evil of what they are doing to the child. #omelas 🌰
But I suppose that's just the point, the story is about the million things in our world that we know are bad but we shrug and say we can't do anything about it. Sorry if I'm just saying the most obvious thing! #omelas 🌰
one thing that always strikes me in this story is, I wonder *how* do we know that everything depends on this child's pain? Is this something someone said once so no one ever risks trying anything else? And would it be destruction and misery or just everyone else being slightly less happy? 🌰 #omelas
I waited til the second day so hopefully it's okay to talk spoilers in The Ones Who Walk Away from #Omelas! When the narrator mentioned "One thing I know there is none of in Omelas is guilt," I thought oh how nice that would be. But at the end I thought, this place could use guilt actually.
"If so, please add an orgy. If an orgy would help, don’t hesitate."
Ok, which of you voted for the orgies in your version of utopia?? #Omelas

Funniest take I've heard all week is @brennanleemulligan.bsky.social calling #HasanPiker the kid trapped in the basement in #Omelas, just suffering for our amusement.
Never thought about the kid being a streamer, does that mean those that walked away are subbed to the kids #twitch?
