Illustrated Orange Roughy as letterhead

From the depths of the Orange Roughy Campaign

Statement

The Orange Roughy campaign o-fish-ally welcomes Jono Ridler to the Fish of
the Year race. While his entry is... unconventional, we believe his presence
brings vital attention to the devastating impacts of bottom trawling, a cause we
hold very deep in our hearts.

However, we have a few key observations:

* Classification: While we admire Mr. Ridler's endurance, the science is
clear: he is a mammal, not a fish. If the criteria for "Fish of the Year" now
includes those with lungs and a penchant for milk, the goalposts have
shifted significantly.

* A Level Playing Field: If mammals are now eligible, it is only fair to extend
an immediate invitation to Mr. Ridler's cousins, the whales and dolphins.
They have before been excluded based on their mammalian classification;
fairness dictates they be allowed to dive into the ballot.

* The Anti-Trawling Voting Bloc: Specifically, the Hector’s and Maui
dolphins would deserve a seat at the table. Like us, they are frequent
victims of bottom trawling nets and would be powerful allies in a visible and
growing voting bloc dedicated to protecting our oceans.

We welcome healthy competition and conversation. May the best candidate win.

Sincerely,

Team Orange Roughy

Orange roughy is on a mission to reproduce and recover their population, but it is not true that there's always plenty of fish in the sea, especially when bottom trawling has decimated your species

So they're now giving online dating a go, hoping to find mates […]

This data could also show that the ethical fishing industry are deliberately sending their boats to places where they know the orange rough don’t live. Thus allowing the orange roughy to recover their numbers where they do live. #nzpol #orangeroughy #notsustainablefishing

As the article shows, what happens here with orange roughy is being watched by others around the world - due to both the destructive nature of- bottom trawling and the overfishing of orange roughy that has taken place. It's time Aotearoa NZ learns from the past and gets this right. #orangeroughy

Just 8 - 18% of the original orange roughy biomass remains in the the East and South Chatham Rise - an area which has in the past been the source of 40% of global orange roughy catch.

A very simple line drawing, done by a young kid.

A seamount in the bottom of the ocean is being bottom trawled by a huge net that has caught one of the fish swimming around it (orange roughy).

There's a crab hiding in a crevice underneath and some coral growing on top, next to it a happy looking octopus hovers.

'New Zealand is the only country that actively bottom trawls in the South Pacific, where it targets #OrangeRoughy and #Alfonsino as they congregate on seamounts.'
