The leaves of this and surrounding trees are dark, almost black, while those near the top are a lighter green due to exposure to the sun. As an experimental crop idea in the early 1900's, California Redwood trees were planted near Beech's Forest, in the Otways forests. To walk among these giants of nature is akin to something spiritual. Their shade, sounds, and immense presence are somehow at home in the Australian climate, and the local bird life thrive among them. These trees are potentially in peril from fires burning through the area in Jan 2026

A giant stringybark towers towards the crystal blue sky above, strands of bark hanging from its central fork. I'd suggest you'd need four or five humans with outstretched hands to circle the trunk of this beauty. There are literally hundreds of thousands of these trees throughout the Otways Ranges, which in Jan 2026 is suffering significant fires
