We usually position ourselves as service providers, and we need to think of ourselves as shapers, people who can be strategic partners.
Day 3 of #Outlier2025 looked ahead to the future of #dataviz in an AI-driven world. From data strategy to custom experiences, we explored how our roles evolve beyond “just making charts”. The field is shifting and we’re ready.

What an amazing #Outlier2025 conference this year! Here are just a few of my highlights, out of the MANY talks and speakers I loved.
The reason I go to conferences outside the cartographic silo in one interactive chart. 25 chart types is now 26 with my addition. Cross-fertilization between allied disciplines is important. Step beyond your conference circuit. New people. New ideas. New friends #Outlier2025

Worth the entry fee alone as modern DataViz philosopher Alberto Cairo explores his own design ethos, imparting so many fantastic ideas, and words of wisdom (plus Black Sabbath 🤘). The definition of a brilliant keynote address to send folks away energised. Thanks #Outlier2025

Yes, precision is important, but transparency is where the trust is going to come back.
One of the first questions we ask when crafting a data story is how to make the data meaningful for those most impacted by it, especially when it involves the local communities we serve.
There's no such thing as an ugly sketch. There are only sketches that help you think, sketches that help you communicate, and sketches that you do for fun.
On day 2 of #Outlier2025, we explored what it means to build trust in visualizations, challenge assumptions, and widen our lens on what counts as data, who it's for, and how it's shared.

#Outlier2025 has been great so far, with many perspectives on data visualization. The tools used to display data amaze me; as someone who uses Tableau, it is a good perspective.
I’m such a big fan of Liuhuaying Yang and her work at @csh.ac.at - her remote talk at #outlier2025 “this is not interesting … but it could be” shows how dry subjects can become engaging visualisations (and in this case, sonifications!). Can’t wait to visit Vienna for a workshop in August!
