Brazil inaugurates the first environmental court in the Pantanal: ecological justice to protect the world's largest wetland In the framework of the COP15 of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, Brazil announced the creation of the first specialized environmental law court in the Pantanal biome. The measure seeks to strengthen biodiversity protection and improve the judicial system’s response to ecological conflicts. The court will operate in the municipality of Bonito, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, a region emblematic for its natural and tourist wealth within the Pantanal, considered the largest continuous wetland in the world. Environmental Justice in Action The president of the state Court of Justice, Dorival Renato Pavan, highlighted that the initiative constitutes an important step to improve the judicial system in environmental matters. He emphasized the need for trained and prevention-oriented magistrates in a country that accumulates about 80 million legal processes, many of them linked to the environment. North Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil - Profile for Birders Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland, covering around 150,000 square kilometers. It is home to an absolutely amazing diversity of wildlife, including the highest density of jaguars anywhere on Earth! It is often called the “Kingdom of Waters” because of its seasonal floods that shape the ecosystem. Declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve for its ecological importance. This is the busiest hotspot for bird watching and wildlife photography in Brazil. Over 650 bird species, including the Jabiru Stork, the symbol of the Pantanal, can be easily seen at the many marshes and lagoons. Still in the #Pantanal, this orange-backed troupial looks a bit like our local Bullock's oriole in BC. Same genus of birds-- #Icterus. They're sitting on a mound of mostly dead plants surrounding and covering a fallen tree trunk at the edge of the muddy water of the Cuiaba river - the mound was, in fact an Island in the river channel. The left hand otter is on the tree trunk looking down , the right hand one is facing the camera with its mouth open showing its teeth in a somewhat aggressive pose although they and the rest of the group were not bothered by our presence out of picture on a bot and played happily around us for the hour we were there. At one point a Cayman approached them at which point they did display truly aggressive behaviour calling loudly and coming together to face down this potential predator who then left.
